Hey there,

I am beefing up my build this week and have decided to jump from my 760 SLI to a 980ti. I currently have 3 1080p monitors with no issues. I was deciding on a 970 SLI build but since I wanted to use a 1440p monitor as my new main, I heard that was a bad idea due to the 3.5 gb of vram. So I've decided to go with the 980ti. But I have two questions. I would like to hook up my 3 1080p monitors and the 1440p to the single 980ti. Is that too much for the card to handle? I would only be gaming on the 1440p, and the other 3 would be showing secondary stuff. Even though I would only be using the single 1440p monitor to game on, would I still see a performance drop from having them all plugged into the same card? Thank you for your time.

You should be okay with most games however if you choose to play Shadow of Mordor with ultra textures you will use around 6GB or more vram and the idle 200+ memory being used for the extra idle monitors might effect the permanence slightly however I can't say for sure because I've never done testing in this situation.

Seems like Nvidia has improved their vram management and you should be okay.

You should check for bugs when using multiple monitors. For example one of my friends with 3 monitors is telling me it's effecting idle gpu usage.

When you get the monitors let us know if you're experiencing any issue's.

The realty is that not too many people are using your a 1440 + 3 extra monitors so there is a good chance there will be some...

What connection option are your current 3 monitors using and which monitor are you planning to buy.

980 ti is a good choice and technically it should work however there might there might be some bugs with so many monitors connected.

Technically if you have so many monitors connected your video card will be using more vram even when you're not gaming however for most games 6 gb is enough even with the other monitors connected/.

You might want to disconnect them if you're playing shadow of mordor with ultra textures or COD Black ops 3 for example.

Thanks for the replies. Right now I'm using hdmi and dvi cables to hook up 3 Benq RL2455 via the 760 SLI. I plan on switching to a DP cable for the 1440p; this is the monitor I was thinking of getting for the primary.

http://www.amazon.com/BenQ-XL2730Z-Monitor-Resolution-FreeSync/dp/B00TUK9D9K

I know its freesync, but it has the ports and specs I'm looking for.

And then in addition to that DP for the 1440p I want to hook up the other 3 benqs via hdmi or dvi to the 980ti.
So yeah just trying to make sure it doesn't hurt the card having that many monitors going, or hinder performance for the main monitor while gaming, even though it would only be like web browsers or other smaller programs running on the other monitors.

It'll work perfectly I just won't be able to benefit from freesync, but thats fine with me.

"Dual Link DVI-I, HDMI 2.0, 3x DisplayPort 1.2" [ ports based on Nvidia and also EVGA & Asus Non reference cards]

The 980 ti has 1 x HDMI & 1 DVI & 3 Display ports unless you get a special edition however i've never seen a 980 ti that has different ports so it might not exist...

Basically your options will be.

Monitor 1 1440 Display port

Monitor 2 1080p Display port

---------------------------------------------------------

Monitor 3 1080p Display port, HDMI or dvi

Monitor 4 1080p Display port, HDMI or dvi

----------------------------------------------------------

Thank you so much. You're correct those are the ports it will have. I chose this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487144

So just to wrap things up and make sure, even though there wont be any other heavy things running will all those monitors connected negatively impact gaming on the 1440p primary? the 6gb vram should pretty much handle that right? Thank you again friend.

For example in the past people using a gsync monitor with 144 hz would push the GPU usage up when idle and finally nvidia patched this up with the current driver release.

Basically what was happening was the more voltage & higher clock speed when a Gsync monitor was set to 144. My remedy was to run the monitor at 120 hz however now i use 165 and all is good except the voltage is a bit higher which makes my card idle around 35-40c during the winter.

Thanks again for all your help.

Your friend is right about the 3 monitors, sometimes my cards will idle at a higher clock when I'm not doing anything until I restart my pc.

I will check back in after everything is setup. Again, thank you and have a great New Year.

No having 4 monitors won't hurt the card. Yes it will impact performance if you have all 4 enabled. I haven't tried 4 monitors yet on my 2 980ti s but I have done 2. With 1 card disabled and my 1440p ASUS ROG Swift as the primary and my old ASUS 144Hz 1080p as the secondary I lost about 5 fps while gaming and avereaged 1GB of VRAM more even though the 1080p wasn't displaying anything. The only way to retain top performance on your 1440p monitor and still have the 3 1080p monitors hooked up is to disable the 3 when you game.

You might want to start a thread to Solve your configuration problem...

I had 2x 1440p monitors hooked up in the past and I didin't have such issue's with a Single Gtx 980 strix.
One of them being a Swift...

You are experiencing some sort of configuration bug...

Hopefully the OP will be problem free with the 4 monitors....
