Hello,

I recently got a 4790k and decided to test it with prime95 and Geekbench.

During my Prime95 test it reached 100c then I stopped the test immediately. For the geekbech it also got reached 100c. The GeekBench numbers where SingleCore: 3437 MultiCore: 14291.

I do have a stock cooler with the cpu.

I know these are not good temperatures, but is it normal to reach these temperatures during these tests?

I'm Running the trial mode of GeekBench 3 (Windows x86 (32-bit))

I use 'Open Hardware Monitor' to look at my temperatures.

Solution
not really mate 80-90c maybe.

you shouldnt use new versions of prime to bench/test haswell chips - its been well documented that the avx instructions severely overinflate voltage & temps - I think geekbench maybe the same

try aida64 mate.

what board is this youre running?

I have the same cpu overclocked to 4.5ghz and just ran the same geekbench test. My max temperature was 63C according to CPUID Hwmonitor idle temps are around 30C. My score was Single core 4038 Multi 15994. I have hyper threading on and my cooler is a Phantek TC12DX. My voltage is 1.120V adaptive with negative offset. Motherboard is Asrock Z97x fatality.

Your temps are very high. I wouldn't use prime95 it is too harsh. Get a good cooler make sure it is on right and make sure you use the right amount of thermal paste.

I use Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to stress test and benchmark. It shows voltages temperatures everything. It's free and not too hard to set up.

Alright, thank you!

I just wanted to make sure that my cpu wasn't defective or damaged in anyway.

I'll give that program you recommended a try.
