So I thought I re-write my thread....

I want to setup a server to work as a NAS, Plex, server with the capability to also have a TV tuner to stream live tv to the house to the HTPC units. Also the server will also have DVR setup for recording live TV for each of the HTPC units.

The HTPC units I will be investigating later, but will be as future proof as possible, providing 4k Ultra HD HDR video streaming from the server, as well as gaming (and on line with stream xbox live etc) in 4K etc. 1 of these units will be connected via my Onkyo surround sounds with 5.2.1 (which I will be looking to beef up to 7.4.2 or better) Each HTPC will have a SSD for the OS and another Sata drive for installing the games to.

So for my server needs with the above, I want to make sure it is more than capable to act as a NAS box for my personal and work file needs, such as word, excel but also to store our personal photos vidoes etc, but also as mentioned above, Plex Media Server (storing 4k Ultra HD HDR content, again making as future proof as possible) the server will also need to be capable to stream the live tv to the HTPC units (to note I have a spare set of Sky Satelite cables which I can make use of here) but to add I need the server to be capable to take requests and store the DVR requests from the HTPC units. This I will research later as I want each HTPC to be able to record up to 4 channels each (total I have no idea) The total number of HTPC to stream to will be Living Room, 3x Bedrooms, and a future games room sometime this year, but to add I will also allow for 3 family member to access the server via plex from their homes. I have looked at Xeon e5 v3 8 cores, but from my understanding any 8 core will do. I would consider using a dual motherboard to boots the needs. Any suggestions and help, Info, on the best CPU , motherboard etc with this will be much appreciated. A lot that I have read has helped, hence I am not looking at i7 for the server now...

The network bandwidth shouldnt be an issue....I will have a capable switch for each HTPC unit to connect to the server via. I am considering between cat-6 or direct to fibre - just want to make sure my CPU will be up to speed so recommendation will help

So to go back to the server, a xeon cpu with a total of 8 core should do the work as a plex, media server as well as stream live and recorded tv. (If so any recommendations on the exact cpu, motherboard- to support the 4k ultra hd hdr (for hevec, hdcp 2.2 h.265- i know the htpc units will do the work of transcoding and work - is this correct)

The htpc units I'm looking at maybe a i7 with 8 cores (is this over kill as I will build a htpc unit for each room over time) this will need to handle the above mention 4k ultra hd hdr (hevec, hdcp 2.2, hdmi 2.0a as well as surround sound to my Onkyo with dolby atmos dts-x thx)- so I thought of looking at gtx970, gtx980) RAM of around 16-32GB will this do, taking into account 4k gaming as time goes on. The OS will be installs on a SSD with an external drive to store the games to etc.... so please provide me with recommendations etc (motherboard the cpu etc for the above HTPC and server) I want to make sure I get this build right, my first step will be to build the htpc and then the server-

Cheers again
