Hello, I am considering getting an SSD for my computer, but want to keep all of my files if possible. What would be the best way to go about keeping my files but putting my OS onto the SSD?

I was thinking making a backup of my files on an external HDD and then completely wiping my current HDD. Then I would install windows 10 on the SSD and restore everything from the backup. Would this method be effective and work well?

Solution
Yes but resinstall programs and games. only backup personal files - work docs, photos, movies, save game files etc.

After backing up - disconnect HDD
go into BIOS and make sure SATA mode = AHCI
connect SSD and instal windows
once done install mobo drivers and then other device drivers such as GPU/monitor etc
turn off > connect HDD and start

once in windows, right click drive to quick format then make folders and copy back data to where youd like.

Ideally keep HDD use only for slow media storage and playback. SSDs for o/s, programs and games
