Is an upgrade from Phenom II X4 840 to an fx-6300 worth it?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1665032

I have a budget of $250 and i'm not sure if it's a signifacnt upgrade to last the next year at least.
My current setup:
RAM:8gb 1066 DDR3 single channel
GPU:XFX R9 270x Double D Edition

So is it worth upgrading to that particular processor, because as you can see my ram is pretty shit aswell.
so any help is appreciated thanks.

Solution
The 840 is effectively an Athlon 2 quad. So really that phenom 2 is probably older than you think. Intel might be better, but the fx 6300 should be a nice upgrade. Do yourself a favor though, get a good board and cooler.

I have an older gigabyte 970a-ud3 board with 8+2 power phasing, as well as a cooler master v6 gt cooler. I have mine clocked at 4.3ghz which helps to. According to folks here that is probably what to expect on air.

Grab that combo and a cooler master hyper 212 evo, then clock the new cpu as high as you can. My plan is to save over the next year and when zen is released I can upgrade or switch to Intel.
no it not. the fx line of cpu been dead for 2-3 years now. the next cpu the zen is not going to be on the a or fm line of mb when it comes out next year. your better off going with h97 mb and an i3 cpu. then if you need more cores when you have the money drop in an i5 or save up for a newer skylake rig. with a skylake mb there going to be around for a few years.

Yes if you could because your Phenom II X4 840 has no Level 3 cache and on CPUs with Level 3 cache it will boost gaming performance by up to ~10% your processor is holding your gaming performance back because of no Level 3 cache so go for it and what ever you do STAY AWAY FROM DUAL CORE CPU'S because gaming is starting to become a Quad Core standard and any Dual Core CPU will hold you back as soon as a game requires a Quad Core. Dual Cores was great in the 90's but it's 2016 and Quad Core is the standard for all gaming computers so 4 cores or more but no Dual Core and Hyper-Threading does not equal more cores it just schedule task for the intel cpu so the cpu stay busy so a Dual Core is not a Quad Core.

that combo is a good deal and would be faster then your current settup

only thing i would really recommend over it if you want to stick with AMD is trying to get a FX 8350/8370 if it has a good combo deal going on. but that also leaves you with a dead end socket.

if you wanted to get a really solid CPU that will last you years to come. maybe save a bit more, or hunt around for a good deal and grab a skylake I5.

that would be the next real step up from an FX-6300 and would last you a very long time.

but plx do not buy an I3, they are not CPU's bad but they aren't really an upgrade compared to an fx-6300, which will overclock like mad and stomp an I3 in modern games.

Does It perform well in FO4 and similar titles? My 840 does pretty well on high but I get constant dips in the teens in the city areas. and will the faster ram in dual channel help with that as well?

Should be much better and RAM speed is not that important although FX processors can benefit from faster RAM, 1866 MHz and maybe even somewhat higher because integrated memory controller has 1866 MHz native frequency while your old one has 1333 MHz IMC.
