External Hard Drive Not Accessible

When I try to open my external HDD i get the error :-
F:\ is not accessible
The Volume does not contain a recognized file system.

I understand my problem will likely be solved by formatting the drive, however I would prefer to avoid that. I ran chkdsk and got the following report :-

Hi Asad, about the diskpart console look this link, http://www.howtogeek.com/197296/how-to-use-the-diskpart-utility-to-assign-and-remove-drive-letters/, I have no disk for testing so look this blog posting. Godbless

Can you elaborate? I'm not familiar with the syntax required to use the diskpart console.
