Broken ps2 port, need to bypass password

Forewarning: I am extremely technologically challenged.

I have an old PC tower which I would really, really, really like to get a slew of old digital photographs off of. Unfortunately, I do not remember the password. I was successfully able to bypass this with the f8 trick on another computer, but the ps2 keyboard port seems to be broken on this one as the keyboard (which works on another computer) does not work when plugged into this one. I tried a USB keyboard but upon further internet investigation, the f8 trick will not work with the USB keyboard. =(

Do I have any other options of ways to get around this? I will be devastated to lose all those photos and I really don't think I can afford to take it somewhere to get the hard drive copied.

Thanks for any help/suggestions.

Here is a decent video but try not to touch the controller board (the green part on that drive in this video) try to handle it as carefully as you can, also, sometimes you have to take ownership of the drive before you can access the files/folders you want. the second link is a video of how to do that, as I said before once you see the drive box pop up open to view files and folders open the folder called users if you dont see that right away open the folder called windows then look for users, open the user folder that it yours and then if it says you cant then you will need to take ownership of the drive first and that's where the second video comes in.

Ok so, I am assuming this is an ide drive based on the age of the system, but if it's sata no worries this will work as well

buy one, connect the drive and the power, plug it in, connect to a working computer, open the drive to view files, under users in the drive you will see your account open it and go to pictures, you can copy them from there to your working drive assuming the hard drive that you are trying to recover them from isn't a paperweight. I hope this helps. Apologies if I shouldn't post links here, I am new.

Thanks so much for your suggestion. This sounds simple enough, but just to be sure, will someone with zero understanding of this still be able to figure this out? And am I correct in understanding that this device will plug into the locked computer and then plug into a second, functioning computer? Will a laptop be sufficient?

Also, is this the same/comparable device? http://www.amazon.com/Drive-Adapter-Converter-Optical-External/dp/B002OV1VJW/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1451853191&sr=8-9&keywords=sata+ide+to+usb

Ok so, you will be removing the hard drive that you want to recover files from, from the computer it is in. Then you will be connecting this adapter to that drive, and then the other end (a usb cable) to a working computer. Use what you have it's going to take a while anyways.. easy enough to do but what I will do, give me a few minutes to find you a decent video of this on youtube and see if you can just follow along with that ok? If I don't find a video of it (im sure I will but if I don't) I will take pictures while using it myself, and post a link to them from my imgur.. to help you along with this process. Just give me a little while maybe half hour or so and I will reply either way ok?

And yes, you can buy that one you linked...

Best of luck getting your photos as EG recommended. *Please* use this as an opportunity to have a proper backup plan for your important data in the future - anything you would be sad to lose is way too important to not have properly backed up, preferably in multiple places and formats.

Update: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! It worked! Not only was I able to recover my photos, but I also felt pretty good about being able to navigate the scary world of electronic devices! ;) I can't even express how thankful I really am for your excellent advice.

Always a good reminder! I am a strong proponent of backing up EVERYTHING, especially as I am a graduate student. This old computer tower, however, was from over a decade ago - long before external hard-drives were affordable for peasants like me. ;)

Great news! Lots of times people trying to get things off old hard drives has unhappy endings, so always nice to see someone successfully recover their stuff!
