Please could someone tell me the best way to make full use of my broadband for gaming. I have read some threads that say to have a direct cable connnection. I currently have a cheap tp link usb wireless. My router is downstairs so I can't plug it into my computer. Do I get a second router or an extender? Some threads suggest an extender but doesn't this boost the signal using wireless so how could that be better than a usb wireless stick? Thanks.

Even though the manufacture would like to trick you a extender is not some magic device. If you USB works poorly because of poor wireless signal a extender sitting in the same location will work just as bad. All that is really different is the type of cable that connects to the computer. The main problem is the lack of good wireless signal and a extender will not magically make the signal better.
Games use very little bandwidth so it is not the speed that is important it is the quality of the signal. Pretty much anything that does not physical plug into the router will be subject to some kind of interference. It doesn't really matter how many router or extenders you have if you have a wireless in the connection you will be subject to interference.

The closest things you can get to a ethernet connection that is not a actual wire is powerline networks. These too are radio but they send the signal over your house wiring. It tends to be better than wireless but it is a form of radio so it does not work in all houses. It does tend to work better for game than wireless in most houses.

Thanks. Could I get an extender and place it next to my pc and then cable connect it to the extender?

Also could anyone tell me if there is much of an advantage for online gaming buying a more advanced router than the default one given by the broadband provider?
