Ping very high in online games?

So here is my situation:
I don't live in the middle of no where, in fact there are about 10 houses on my 1 mile stretch of road. I keep being told by all DSL companies available, 'We are not available in your area.'
Although, I do have Windstream DSL internet. This internet plan is no longer offered. The plan is 3 mbps down, and .3 mbps up. This is fine for web searching and what not. I play online games. Now you would think since I have Windstream DSL, I should be able to upgrade to faster internet. NOT A CHANCE! Windstream says like others, 'we are no longer available in your area.' Our only choice left, is Exede Satellite Internet, or DishNET Satellite Internet. But I'm wondering... Why is my ping so high on a DSL network? My ping during online games (with people across the world) is 1000-2000ms. That makes the games unplayable. I am wondering why it's so high, since this is only DSL. The thing that bothers me is waaaayyy down at the end of the street, THOSE people are offered Time Warner Cable. My family NEEDS TWC on our end. But anyways... Why is it so high. If I got satellite, it would probably be even higher! If theres anyway to fix this problem, please let me know. Unless we want ridiculously high ping from satellite, or we want our 3/.3 plan with weirdly high ping, we just have to wait until Verizon Fios covers our area.

(I live in Manlius NY, but not in the town. On the outer borders near Pompey, NY)

My guess is you're on the very fringes of the range of the Windstream DSLAM, and your area is too sparsely populated for anyone to justify the cost of putting in more infrastructure to offer better speeds to you. DSL does have a pretty limited range, and depending on how long your street is, you may simply be too far away to get it. This might be why Windstream is saying they aren't available to you anymore, you're too far away for DSL to work properly, and that might be why you have such terrible pings, you're having lots of retransmits due to signal degradation. They probably shouldn't have offered service to you in the first place, but maybe a field tech decided you're just close enough to the DSLAM to get it to a semi-working state...

You might just have to settle for Satellite for the moment, your pings won't be great, but they'll be better than 1000-2000ms.

Thank you so much for your answer, as this really helps me out. I think it would be a good idea to get satellite for the moment, but what about wireless? I found a company that uses Sprint cell towers for wireless internet and I was wondering if the ping would be any more or any less than satellite. Thank you :)
