I've been having connectivity issues in my garage and I'm looking into buying some sort of extender to widen the range of my router. What are some things I should look into and what are some things I should avoid? Also, what USB dongles should I look into? And if you have any suggestions about specific products, that would be greatly appreciated too.

Wifi extenders are the last choice for extending wifi. First choice is to run an ethernet cable to an access point. Second is to run a powerline network to the garage then attach an access point to the adapter. Only if these two are not possible would you want to try an extender.

Can you please explain both of those options a little more in depth?

Ethernet cable is also known as Cat5e or Cat6 cable. It is the common cables that attacks computers to a network. It is the fastest and most reliable way to have a network, outside of a data center.

Powerline networking uses the household wiring to transmit a signal that carries the network. It is more variable in both speed and reliability. But it works satisfactorily for many cases. Here is a recent review article that should help.
