Could my GPU's slow performance be attributed to insufficient power from the power supply?

I just connected my new R9 390 and everything seems to be running fine, except I am not getting the frame rates I was expecting. All latest drivers are installed.

I am suspecting that for some reason the GPU may not be getting adequate power from the power supply (both PCI-E connectors are connected).

Could slow performance ever be caused by insufficient power? Or would insufficient power lead to some other problems, but not slow performance?

Thanks.

I don't think its the power supply that psu has more then enough power for that card. What games are you playing and what are your frame rates?

I've been playing Far Cry 4 mostly. I haven't measured frame rates but the game feels choppy at times. I optimized the game's settings through AMD software that came with the card's drivers. The optimized settings are actually the absolute highest quality settings. I'm thinking I should lower those for a more realistic optimum (like turning off God Rays, ambient occlusion, fur, and trees).

Any suggestions?

did you uninstall the old drivers before upgrading?

is your windows set to high power under power options?

what AA do you have set?

Yes I completely uninstalled my previous drivers (NVIDIA).

Settings are set to "balanced" in power options. There isn't an option for high power, just power saver.

I have it set to SMAA, but I have also tried to turn off AA completely. The game still gets choppy at certain points.

there should be both balanced and high performance options

set to high performance

right click the desktop

amd radeon settings > gaming > global settings > global overdrive

make sure nothing is set to negative numbers

gpu clock should be 0%

make power limit +25%

The OP has a 390, which is not an Nvidia card.

If you read more into farcry 4 this game has issues with fps spikes. Try another game and let me know what it does.

What does "power limit" do specifically? Please explain what this changes.

Also, what happens if you have multiple software installed? Do settings in MSI Afterburner override those in the AMD control panel?
