Hi,

I'm currently upgrading my PC and I need some help with what PSU wattage output I'll need.

My specs (will be) as follows:

CPU - AMD fx9590
CPU Heatsink - Cooler Master V8
Mobo - ASRock Fatil1ty 970 Performance
GPU - Sapphire AMD Radeon r9 280x TOXIC
RAM - 3x DDR3 1600mhz 4gb
HD - 7200rpm 750gb
3 USB connections (inc mouse, keyboard, headset)
6 x 120mm fans

I've been using a novatech 600w PSU for the last 5 years and it's done me fine. I've had a look at PSU calculators and I'm told I'll need 800w+ for my new build but I've seen people suggest less for similar builds.

I would appreciate any help!

I believe the Novatech units are made primarily by Sirtec, so chances are it's not bad, not good either, but not terrible and should be ok for what you plan, but it isn't exactly a mainstream brand and depending on the model could already be quite old. As to reliability, there are reports of them dieing spectacularly on moderate systems with old phenom's and 9800gt's which weren't exactly power hogs. Personally, its a PSU. It's the single most important component of the pc, by far. It has direct contact with every other component, so 1 good spike, time at undervoltage or overvoltage is all it takes to totally ruin anything and everything else. You do plan on OC, so if ripple isn't tight, you'll not get any stability with voltages...
if you havent bought the gpu yet, why not get an r9 380? it has pretty much the same price point and performance for a newer card. i'd recommend a good 750w, at least. that amd chip with the amd card is gonna make a pretty power hungry machine, especially if you overclock.

Any good brand 750 watt psu will work. Can the V8 even handle the 9590 that chip runs uber hot.

I'm not planning to overclock, so I think I'll be okay! Thank you for the replies also. I think I'm just going to stick with a GTX 770, seeing as the power consumption is far less for a similar performance output.

If not though, I've found an opportunity to get a novatech 850w PSU for really cheap. I know most people suggest to just go for high-end brands, but do you reckon this PSU will fry the rest of my hardware?

Pretty much, my recommendation is to save up some cash, do some research and buy a new unit, in the size needed, that has good quality and dependability and a good warranty.
