New rig,

ASUS Z170-AR Motherboard
Intel Core i7 6700
Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2400C14R 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 Red
HDD Western Digital 2TB WD20EARS SATA/64mb

Boot it up using a Win7 DVD which I have used it on 2 other PCs. Select Win 7 Ultimate 64bit to install, copies files ok, restarts, then display "windows is starting services" along with an error message saying windows restarted unexpectantly, setup will continue after restart, which goes on in a endless loop.

Wife walks in, decides to have a go, and schools me on how I should format the HDD first, (which I have done numerous times, but I just nod and agree with her) meanwhile leaving the room to get a drink, she yells out which version to install, i yell out ultimate, and she selects the 32bit version, and it installs correctly. Now she gloats about how awesome she is, and again, I go along with it and decided to ask to advice here.

Now, why won't the system install win7 64bit ? all the hardware is brand new, except for the hdd, which i know works because i have just migrated all the media files off to somewhere else, and also that everything works perfectly fine in 32bit environment. I've also checked that both the cpu and mobo are 64bit ready. What else could be the problem?

Any ideas guys ?

[Update] Bought a new Seagate HDD, win7 64bit actually installed smoothly, installed drivers, restarted a few times, all good. decided to let it run windows update overnight, I was presented with a blue screen in the morning, restart, blue screen again. So I dug out the Windows DVD and decided to format/reinstall again, only this time it blue screens before evening getting to copy windows files. Again, Win7 32 bit works perfectly. Everything is new, what can stop a 64bit installation so catastrophically ?

Solution
Maybe the windows license key problem, you used it for 2 other PCs already, and try 32-bit, now you try the 64-bit. I know the retail windows 7 has the same key for 32- and 64-bit, if you use it for 32-bit, then you maybe have problem to use the same key for the 64-bit. But the problem maybe something else.

Thanks for your reply.

Assuming the license is not accepted by windows at all, it should at least give me the option to enter another or buy a new one, right?
But the problem here is that it doesn't even install properly. I'm not even sure whether the problem lies in the hardware or software.

Hi Yoinkky I'm having a similar problem and my specs are similar ( asus Rog maximus VIII impact, 6700k, 2x16gb ddr4 3000mhz)... I'm going nuts. in my case I loaded windows pro 7 64bit on a USB and also cd and they start loading the drivers to install and when the windows logo is about to spin animate it freezes and I get a blue screen of death. mentioning about removing new hardware or check bios settings or bios shadowing... but when I load my 32 bit windows 7 cd all goes smooth.... have you managed to upgrade to 64 bit?
