Ok so I am going to be replacing my motherboard and cpu with a MSI Z97-GAMING 5 or Asus Z97-A with a i7 4790k for the cpu. So I can install them into my computer hardware wise no problem. But I really don't know how to do much past that. I assume the next step would be start up my pc with the motherboard disk in for the drivers but im not sure because I don't know if I do that first or do a fresh install of windows first. As well with the fresh install it was already used wit hthe previous mobo and cpu so I would assume I would need to deactivate it from that hardware and activate it on the new hardware but I have no idea how to do that, it is a retail version not a oem version. I could take it somewhere and have someone do this all for me but I wouldn't learn from that and it would cost a fortune. So if anyone could help by putting some kind of step by step instructions together for me that would be great. I have tried looking up videos but there arn't really any on youtube. Thanks so much.

It would be just like building a new system. There is no way to "deactivate" a copy of windows. You would just reinstall. OEM copies are bound to th motherboard. Be prepared to buy a new copy of windows.
1. Build System
2. Install Windows
3. Install ethernet/wifi drivers. Get online.
4. Install windows updates, keep checking till it won't update anymore.
5. Check device manager for drivers that we're not installed during windows update.

If the previous motherboard was a intel board and not too old you may be able to just boot right to the hdd. But you tend to spend more time to fixing other issues then time saved not reinstalling windows.

I heard people say even if it is a retail version i would have to like call Microsoft or something to have them unlink it from the old mobo? And i never have installed a copy of windows. So is it really just as easy as puting the disk in and following on screen instructions?

What version of windows are you trying to install?
If you have multiple HDD I would suggest unplugging them during the install. It's best to enter the BIOS boot menu and selecting efi boot or UEFI boot manually. But once you get the install going then yes. Just follow the onscreen prompts. If you can select "skip" when it ask for your key. Then you just need to select the drive you want to install too.

A retail copy of windows can be moved from motherboard to motherboard. A retail copy is a copy of windows that has been purchased separately from a computer. It also is not sold as a "oem" copy. If you do indeed have a retail copy it should activate online. IF not you'll be asked to call. No biggie.

Just install like normal. After it has done installing and you boot up to desktop at some point you will get the activation wizard, follow the instructions and select the phone activation. The activation wizard tells you what to do. When calling MS just tell that you are reinstalling to a new computer and they will send you a code you need to type into a field in the wizard and then you should be done.

Edit. I've done this multiple times and theres really nothing to it.
