First time build disaster!

Hi all,

Just put together my first build and I was feeling pretty damn confident that I'd done everything right. All the connectors were in and nothing lose.
I plugged it in and then

BANG

tripped everything in the house and there was a big arse pop and spark from the PSU.
Needless to say it's dead.
I really hope it's just the PSU but what are the chances of it having killed everything?
Any ideas why?
It was a decent modular PSU as well, a seasonic 620w m12 evo.

You really won't know until you try booting again with a new PSU. At least that PSU has OPP and OVP circuits so the rest of your parts may have survived.

Get yourself a surge protector too while your buying a new PSU.

RMA the PSU and hope that the replacement will be fine. Did you at least test everything outside of the case to make sure it was working before assembling it? You may have an extra post that shorted the motherboard to the case.

It was connected to a surge protector.
What's RMA mean lol?
And no I didn't test everything out of the case. As a rule I wasn't sure that was advised.

Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) by contacting the store or Seasonic if you're past the normal store warranty. I always test outside of the case; if it doesn't work in the case, then I'm pretty sure the issue is a short. Are you 100% sure there isn't an extra post under the motherboard? While waiting for the replacement, could you test everything with an older PSU? I always keep an old one as it's very useful.

A short would cause a spark from the PSU and it not turn on would it?
And no, there are no extra posts under the mobo.
I don't have an old PSU because, as the title states, its a first build.

Not an option I'm afraid. A replacement will be here tomorrow anyway.
Either way, bar the PSU being knackered nothing else could cause it to bust like that though right? I mean, even if I had damaged the other parts during the build (which I don't believe I did) it still wouldn't cause the PSU to do that would it?

It shouldn't because the PSU has overload protection. It's possible the PSU was dropped in transit and damaged.

Well, the replacement came and I installed it. Worked first time and, as far as I can tell, everything is working just fine.
I feel pretty vindicated. I KNEW I hadn't done anything lol. I guess it's a good job I invested in a decent PSU.
Anyone know how I should go about testing everything?

I would just use some temperature monitoring software and keep and I on the temps and then run some game and graphics benchmarks, like FutureMark or Unigine. As long as your performance is on par with other systems, you should be OK.
