Hello everyone,

I have a second old computer with an ASUS P5KPL motherboard. It currently has 2GB RAM (2 x 1GB,
dual channel (A), and I want to upgrade its total RAM capacity to 4GB. The memory kit installed is ~This~

According to the motherboard manual:
  • -You may install 256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB and 2 GB unbuffered non -
ECC DDR2 DIMMs into the DIMM sockets.

-You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B.

-For single-channel configuration, install either two single-sided
memory modules or one double-sided memory module.

-When installing four DDR2 DIMM modules, install the single-sided
    memory modules.

Does that mean that in case I want to upgrade to 4GB total, the currently installed kit can not be utilized
and has to be removed no matter what, since these RAM sticks are double sided? (?)

Thank you!

if the P.N. you posted (KHX6400D2K2/2G) is the right one then yes, and you can notice that there is more thermal and a blank pcb in one side. you can always take apart the ram and chek.
i did that in some broken memory and some models have the same thing, a bank pcb similar to memory modules and more thermal to make the same size of real memory chips.

Thank you for your reply,

So, lets say I go ahead and install 1GB module on each slot, don't they -all- have to be
single-sided memory modules? Because according to the motherboard manual:

"When installing four DDR2 DIMM modules, install the single-sided memory modules."

Aren't these 2 Kingston Memory sticks double-sided? (photo above). I can't find this information
anywhere, but upon visual inspection they seem to be double-sided (meaning there is a group
of chips on each side of the physical surface of the memory stick!). Thanks!

Are you sure about this? Can you confirm it? Because I've taken a picture of it
and to me it seems like they are double-sided RAM modules!

Thanks again

Hmmm that sounds quite reasonable, and yes, that is the P.N. (KHX6400D2K2/2G).
It's actually a bit strange that product description in every site don't specify whether it is
Single or Double Sided!

So, I can purchase the same kit again or any other motherboard compatible "unbuffered,
non -ECC, single sided, DDR2 DIMMs", (single or dual channel doesn't matter), right? :)
