Audio stopped working after installing Wireless PCIe adapter

Hello, I have been using my onboard audio jacks for the last few years without any issues. After installing a DLink DWA-552 wireless adapter into my only remaining PCIe slot, my audio stopped working. I already checked and I have the correct and most up to date drivers for Realtek. One issue that I don't understand why it happens is when I click on the Realtek HD Audio Manager, it says that I am seeing a blank page because no audio device is connected, yet when I plug something into the audio jack, I get a pop up saying that I have plugged in a new audio device and it asks me to select whether it is headphones or speakers. I have checked dxdiag and it states that there are no issues found with my devices, I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, I have read probably 30 other similar threads and attempted all of the solutions posted, none of which have worked for me.

Also forgot to mention, I am using Windows 7 64 bit and I have tried to do a system restore to a point where I know it worked and still nothing.

Just so we're on the same page - you're having issues with the audio ports on the motherboard and not the ones that came on your case, right?

I only ask because that would probably be an easy fix. The motherboard header for the case's audio jacks probably got disconnected while you were in there. They're tiny and some don't have anything holding them in besides friction.

It sounds like you've run through every other solution I can think of.

I had this problem about 15 years ago and somehow, my audio settings had been deactivated. Windows was basically telling the jack not to work... I doubt your problem isn't that easy to solve, though.

I'm stumped. There's really nothing about a PCIe card that should affect your motherboard's audio jack at all, unless it was itself a soundcard. Even then, you would have seen the problem in the settings you've been through several times.

I can't imagine it's a power issue. If you were underpowered, I think a lack of audio would be the last problem you'd notice.

Have you tried removing the PCIe card to see if the jack works again? That would at least confirm that it's the PCIe card.

I actually decided to take out the wireless adapter and try and see if the audio works and it actually no longer works at all, even without the wireless adapter. I have also looked and fumbled with a few wires and none of them seemed disconnected, if they were then me messing around with them should have somewhat fixed that issue. The jacks that I am trying to use are coming out of the motherboard yes. The jacks on the front of my case honestly haven't worked since I pretty much first got this computer, I always just used the ones in the back.

If that motherboard component got fried, wouldn't it completely not work? I don't think it would detect me inserting my headphones if it was fried.

So that rules out several potential causes.

Since they're definitely on-board, nothing coming unplugged from the motherboard should matter.

If the speakers are detected when plugged in, it sounds like a software issue. I agree that if it were a hardware issue, it wouldn't recognize that anything is plugged in. With Windows not recognizing an issue, it sounds like a settings issue as opposed to a driver issue (it could be a driver issue but you ruled that out early by updating/uninstalling/installing).

This is a long shot but I've had this issue in the past. I've installed new software, including drivers, where a setting is changed and I get no sound. I'd check the output and change it from analog to digital, or the other way around, depending on the current setting. I'd also check to see if there's any non-Windows software running that's attempting to control the audio and is either turned down or muted.

I'm sure you've poured through settings so I doubt that will help. My only other suggestion is to take it to a good shop.

What board are you using? Maybe others have had the same issue. I can search around to see if anyone else has had the same problem and found a solution.

Here's one solution that seemed to work for someone else.

I have an ASUS P8H61-M motherboard. I have checked and made sure that audio is enabled in the BIOS. Here is everything that I have listed under audio devices: http://i.imgur.com/r1GLiWy.png

I tried out everything that you suggested Sneezer and none of those options unfortunately worked. I enabled/disabled/changed to default all of my sound devices and nothing worked. I do know for a fact that my Speakers Realtek High Definition Audio option was set as default while it did work.

Also, the link you suggested, unfortunately I have already looked at that and have tried all of the options other than installing a new sound card.

Here's someone having a similar issue with the same board. An ASUS rep responds and apparently helps fix the problem:
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1742502/realtek-audio-working-recieving-sound-hdmi-cable.html#11247147

I've found instances of similar problems, specifically with ASUS boards. There's mention of it being common but the cause and symptoms seem to vary. One person was having issues with their HDMI connection essentially taking over the audio feed. The screen hooked up to the HDMI played the audio and the jack on the board was disabled.

Another doesn't end in a solution but helps narrow down the possible cause by checking to see if an audio visualizer registers that music is playing.

Here's one discussion about it on the ASUS forums:
https://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?id=20100726230024593&board_id=1&model=Rampage+III+Extreme&page=1&SLanguage=en-us

I think I'm out of ideas. I'm frustrated with the problem and it's not even my PC.

Have you tried the ASUS forums? If it's the board, you may find an answer there.
