I have two Samsung M3 1TB external HDD's, and I leave both connected to my laptop through a USB hub 3.0. Sometimes their blue light turn off automatically if they're left unused for a while. But sometimes the blue light keeps turned on even though I'm not doing anything with them.

What is normal: for the blue light be turned on or off? Will they wear out if the light keeps turned on?

Hi there synnchan,

You can use some third party tool that will show you what is accessing the drive. There are quite a lot of threads on that in the forum.
In case a drive is constantly reading/writing, It is normal that it wear out faster. Yet, my guess is that yours just stay idle.
I don't think that you should really worry about that.
