Female USB broken off external HDD, must recover data

As stated, I'm working with a 1 TB external HDD (G-Drive, serial # cc2mnppk) that has the female connector broken off the board and fell inside the casing.

I bought the drive at Apple and have since been back to the store. They said they would replace it, but they couldn't rescue my data. I have to do that.

So, I cracked it open. There was a small board that received USB input. This board has pins that connect to a standard SATA connector and the same (5 volt?) connector that I currently have plugged into a SSD on my other machine. So I did the logical thing and plugged this drive into my computer using a second SATA connector and an available (5 volt?) supply cable from my PSU.

Now the issue: The drive does not appear in My Computer, but DOES appear in computer management (where one would normally assign a letter to the drive) and in the device manager. However, there doesn't seem to be any way to assign a letter without formatting the drive.

Can I access the data on this drive?

You're on the right track but it seems you're on the wrong operating system. To read an Apple drive you need to be in an Apple system which can recognise the file system they use. Windows uses NTFS and won't recognise the disk without formatting it in that system. I think formatting would kill any chance of data recovery.

Use a Mac or a Linux or other *nix system.

I didn't think this external hard drive was operating system specific. I bought it at Apple, but it's not an Apple product, though I'm not sure if I ever actually used it in a windows machine.

How can I connect this to an Apple machine (since I can't break it open)? Can I leave the power supply connected on my windows machine but get a SATA to USB adapter and plug it into the Mac?
