Hey everyone!

Last week I finally received my R9 390 from Newegg.ca for $460 CAD.

With that card included, here are my specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 6-Core 3.5Ghz
RAM: G.Skills X Series 8GB DDR3 (2 x 4GB)
GPU: XFX R9 390
PSU: Antec 650W 80+ Bronze

When I played Skyrim maxed out on this card, without mods, I get a constant 60 FPS when outdoors in the wilderness or wherever there isn't much stuff going. However, when I enter dense areas, like cities, my once 60 FPS, can often drop to 30-40 FPS. In my opinion, this is really annoying and takes a lot away from my experience.

For example, once i enter the town of Riften, my FPS will drop to around 30 FPS, when looking towards the center of the town, basically, the more stuff that my camera is looking towards, the more my FPS drops, by a lot.

So, I figured that either my expectations for the R9 390 were too high, or my CPU, the AMD FX-6300, was effecting my performance.

Is the issue likely my CPU? I heard that AMD CPUs are pretty big culprits when it comes to bottlenecking in-game.

I'm thinking of changing my CPU now. To an Intel i5 4460 with an H81M motherboard, as I have heard that the 4460 doesn't really bottleneck most modern day cards, and that it would be a good upgrade, in terms of gaming.

Thank you for the help! :)

Yes I think your 6300 Fx cpu is whats causing this issue you may have some minor bottlenecking going on and if your ready to go to Intel it will help improve your game play but you still got upgrade options if your board allows a 8320 or 8350 or 8370 and would be less money then a new board and cpu..
But if you go to Intel If it was me I would go with a Z97 BOARD and your 4460 later you can upgrade all the way up to a I7 4790K Cpu...

IDK if they are buying the board I think it makes more sense to get the better CPU so they don't have an extra laying around. If you are going to upgrade though I would just honestly go skylake and not upgrade for a long time after that if that's an option.

4690l for 240
z97 Mobo for 100-140

6600k for 280
z170 Mobo for 150
16bg ddr4 100
