What the title says.

However, I'd very much appreciate someone explaining how I would be able to tell this information apart on my own. Is it the LGA 1151 that governs whether it will work? If so, with both having LGA 1151, are they compatible? I'd heard that some of the newer motherboard require new intel processors in order for them to fit.

Thanks for taking time outta your day to answer this :)
Cheers

A LGA1151 i5 6600K will fit in an ASUS X170 Pro LGA1151 motherboard and the two are a good and appropriate fit. The CPU comes without a stock heatsink, so you will need to get an aftermarket CPU cooler for it.

The motherboard is made for that processor. The i5 6600k is the newest version of intel processors and the z170 based motherboards are also the latest. They were released at the same time as one depends on the other. That is the boxed version i would presume(retail) Like DonkeyOatie said get rid of the cooler that comes with it and get an after market cooler. The factory ones are very sub par. Less than $50 you can have a great cooler. Personally I have the Cooler Master Hyper T4 and i keep temps at around 43c fully loaded on the i7 4790k.

FYI: With the Skylake generation, the K CPUs no longer include a cooler. You have to purchase one separately.

The non-K Skylakes do include a stock cooler though.
