I am looking to "upgrade" my two mixed sets of 1600 c9 (4x4GB) to one set of 2x8GB and found these two sets but can't decide :

1600 c7: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231628&cm_mmc=CNETFindMEMCA-_-20-231-628-_-na-_-na

2400 c10: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231589&AID=10657534&PID=3938566&SID=&nm_mc=AFC-C8JunctionCA&cm_mmc=AFC-C8JunctionCA-_-na-_-na-_-na&utm_medium=affiliates&utm_source=afc-%zn

This rig is used for gaming. All other system info is available by scrolling your cursor over my avatar ;)

Solution
Sweet spot price/performance wise is 1866/2400, your rig should eacily handle 2400 and more and more Games are using DRAM better in the Games, i.e. Fallout 4 shows double digit gains with faster DRAM

You should choose frequencies that are supported by your motherboard. I don't think that upgrading form 16 to 16 just slightly faster ram will make big difference.

For gaming, who cares? its pretty well documented that faster ram (with higher timings) does not do jack for gaming. Go with what is cheaper and does not cause you to mix and match.

I run 1866 and never tell myself, "man I wish my ram was faster". Go with what is cheaper and i am sure you will be happy.

Yup, Motherboard supports up 3000 MHz so that's not a factor but thanks for reminding me.

I don't think I'll see a huge difference going from 1600 c9 to 1600 c7 either but I do believe that there will be some improvement for a few reasons.

First the 16GB 1600 c9 is made up of two sets of 2x4GB. They are the same brand and timings (Corsair Vengeance 1600 C9) but they have VERY different secondary and tertiary timings with the second set being much looser. I have manually set the timings to "mimic" the lower set but that requires a significant boost to the voltages (DRAM and sys agent) to be stable.

The fact that DDR3 seems to be at an all time low for quality kits is what prompted me to look into getting a single set of 16GB as opposed to my current two 2x4GB sets.

Fallout 4 runs better with faster RAM !?! Now that would be a nice boost while I wait for Pascal to upgrade my GTX 770 :D

So you would go with the 2400 c10 over the 1600 c7 Tradesman?

Thanks very much for that info Tradesman!

I'm going to go with the 2400 c10 then.

BTW, I'm going with this G.Skills Trident set because of your "constant" recommendations and praise of them ;)

Bye-Bye Corsair
