I do a fair bit of lightroom work as well as some 3dgaming on my free time. My 2700k is about 4 years old and I'm wondering if it is worth upgrading or should I hold out for another generation. From what I read, there's about a 10-15% (lets say 12.5%) clock for clock improvement each generation so theoretically @ 12.5%:

sandy @ 4.7ghz = ivy @ 4.18ghz = haswell @ 3.76ghz = skylake @ 3.42ghz

Just want to have a good idea of what to expect when upgrading to see if it's worthy yet. Thanks

Unless you specifically want DDR4, m.2, or usb 3.1 with out using a add on card then absolutely NO

In gaming there is almost zero difference, if editing or rendering you would only slightly finish sooner definitely not worth the cost to upgrade, hell you probably wouldn't even notice the difference

I say stay on what you have for now.

I am running a 2600K @ 4.2 Ghz and will keep on doing so until games need more. I do programming, gaming, and H264 encoding on my system.

Right now the only processor that would be a noticeable improvement for me would be the 6700k, and that would only be for my encoding. When most games use over four threads, I will probably switch.

Good luck!

I'm still running my i7 with no signs of weakness yet. So no need to even think about replacing it yet.

Unless you have a specific need for the new CPUs (instruction set, QS, iGPU, etc), the i7 2700K has been one hell of a purchase and continues to keep up.

Cheers!

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will hold off for another couple of generations.

I may consider adding another GTX670 as the single card is starting to show it's age. They go for around 100 used. No plans for 4k gaming.
