I am trying to open a Maxtor hard drive on my laptop. In device manager the hard drive is there, but there seems to be a problem with it as I get an error message that it is not working properly. Then sometimes I will get a message saying this device is working properly when I open up the properties and click on general. I have tried unplugging and plugging in again and then i may get a message saying the drive is corrupted, so reformat it. Then when I click to reformat it, it tells me that I will lose everything on the hard drive.

Please help. I have tried printers and devices and all the info with that, I have tried troubleshooting, I have tried device managers, what else can I do?
Can you please help?

Solution
If it shows a drive letter, use that letter in place of X in this syntax to enter into a Command Prompt. The /r switch is to allow the system to fix anything it finds.

So press the Windows key and R together then at the prompt, type

chkdsk X: /r

It may take several hours to complete but it beats formatting then endlessly trying to recover lost files.
