Hello!
I am using Gigabyte GA-Z170-HD3 DDR3 ATX LGA1151 Motherboard with Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2000 Memory. Whenever I try to set up XMP Profile the system doesn't boot and resets to default.
If you look at the manufacturer's description of the product at: http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5488#sp it says that it does indeed support 2000 mHz modules. Here's the quote:
"Support for DDR3 3200(OC) / 3100(OC) / 3000(OC) / 2933(OC) / 2800(OC) / 2666(OC) / 2400(OC) / 2133(OC) / 2000(OC) / 1866(OC) / 1600 / 1333 MHz memory modules".
Could you help me set it up?
Thanks,

Below is the list of my parts. The pcpartpicker's description of supported RAM's frequencies of my MOBO is considerably shorter than the one on Gigabyte's site.

Hello,
Skylake does not officially support DDR3 as shown in this article:
http://wccftech.com/skylake-does-not-support-ddr3-damage-ddr3l-only/
So it looks like you will have to buy some DDR4 RAM.

ya, how many buy off the hype and not some facts ?? funny how asus has boards that support up to 1.65v on skylake but like the articles on it says intel says no way ???

go figure ??

how many threads will there be when that burns up the memory controllers on these chips down the road ?? seems best to go low voltage ddr3 or why would you go skylake and not go ddr4 to start with ?? [opinion]

@Christian D
Some motherboards support DDR3 with Skylake. My motherboard's name specifically states that it supports DDR3.

@geofelt
If you look at my motherboard's ram compatibility list there are several RAMs that pack 1.65 volts and are supported.
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5488#memory%20support%20list
Could you provide my the link that states otherwise? I cannot return the RAM as it is quite old and I carry it forward from an older build. Do you recommend any settings to get the most out of it?

@junkeymonkey
At the time of purchase of my motherboard I didn't know that was the case, it wasn't mentioned anywhere. I am not planning on overclocking, will it be alright? I went with DDR3 as I already had 8GB of DD3 RAM from previous build and I read that there wasn't significant difference between DDR3 and DDR4.

You do realize his board only has ddr3 and ddr3L slots on it, there are no ddr4 slots. I would manually set the speed and timings for your ram if your having trouble with the XMP profile.

Sadly if you look at the QVL for ram on that board the only 2000Mhz ram supported is GEIL 2GB stick. The only speed of Patriot ram that is officially supported is 1600MHz

You could also try to set the timings manually in the bios. Sometimes with some fiddling it can become stable or at least use lower settings like 1866 or something. Memory is speed is not that important, especially in gaming scenarios.

I assume that you had the ram before you built your system. If the ram is new return it for a proper ddr4 kit.

memory speeds is not as a issue as a non low voltage memory can or looks to be ? max os 1.35v on ddr3 skylake and reports say anything over that is your own risk

''That's just plain wrong. An Intel spokesman told me clearly that Skylake does not support DDR3 or DDR3L at 1.5 volts. It only supports DDR3L at 1.35 volts and DDR4 at 1.2 volts, period, end of story.''

you just take it as you read into it and do what you feel is best ??

compatible by who ? not according to intel ??

I guess they figure you don't catch all that and in 8 months you burn it up and hope your back buying another one of there boards ??? = more sales to them I guess ?

anyway you do as you feel is best maybe intel is wrong about there cpu's they engineered and designed , and asus and gigabyte know better then intel does ?? LOL......

good luck

for what like 10 minutes or for years on normal use ?? see they don't care cause if it was to burn up the cpu its not there issue cause thatrs intel then intel will say ''well its not supported'' then your stuck lose -lose and you rebuy all new -

all they did was quickly stick it in and say ''ya it works '' and move on to the next stick to try -- ya the board may support it but the cpu don't

back to .....

I have troubles setting the timings myself as it keeps resetting to default after failed POST, I haven't tried lower than 2000 mhZ though.
There are several sources reposting the Intel's statement regarding Skylakes incapability of safety supporting voltages 1,35V+.
Can I get the right timings and stuff while at the same time lowering the voltage to 1,35V?
I've issued a ticket to Gigabyte's tech support regarding the supposed safe cap of 1,35V and how it relates to their own list of supported RAMs with higher voltages.
Should I keep it as it is and not fiddle with the XMP at all, try to get it to work with higher Mhz or get some low voltage new sticks?

My current sticks boot at 1.5V as it was predicted in the thread before.

anything out side intels specs is considered overclocking , and with that its all your own risk - 1.65v/1.50v may work for how long or how stable ?????

may run forever on it ?? either way intels part in all that is there butt is covered with anything over there 1.35v/1600 limit its all on you after that and all there going to stand behind ...

memory types
DDR4-1866/2133, DDR3L-1333/1600 @ 1.35V

you know you go to patriot memory and use there memory finder for your board no ddr3 comes up ?? just ddr4

https://patriotmemory.com/memory-finder/#

so I guess there not backing that up as well ???
