Hi,

I've been having a lot of issues recently regarding noise with my computer. I've traced it down to the power supply. The unit is not the best but far from tier 5 - its an EVGA W1 500W 80+. Its been making a beeping noise often, when starting applications like Chrome, although it is very low pitch. Put my ear next to the supply and its also been making a ticking noise. Now, should I send it back, get a refund, use that money and other money to buy a Corsair RM550 Modular power supply? I'm pretty sure power supplies should not be making ticking noises.

Cheers, qwertyK

Should not always be ticking , the RM is a much better power supply , but I would go with a EVGA GS or G2.

They aren't built to last , that's why they are cheap.

The RMi and the 1000W RM models are better PSUs, but I think the RM550 is Tier 3, along with EVGA's 500W offering - so I don't think it's too much better in fairness.

GS, G2, or even B2 are much better options. This GS 550W seems to be the best priced EVGA offering at the moment: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/evga-power-supply-220gs0550v1

Although this XFX 550W is a good option too: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/xfx-power-supply-p1550sxxb9

Corsair have a significantly higher ratio of junk PSUs vs decent ones.

EVGA only really have one or two on the poorer end of the scale, unfortunately you have one.

As SR-71 pointed out above, it's all about who actually builds them, not who's branding is on the unit.

Yeah, I was a bit weary of buying the unit when I saw that the OEM was HEC......like to think of it as "Oh what the HEC, why did my power supply just blow up?"...LOL......

Can you please give me a link to the google search page as for some reason that link wont work....what did it say?

In short, no surge protection, extremely poor ripple suppression on the 12v rail and poor quality capacitors. Made by HEC who don't have a good track record for quality.

Review the Tier list here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html it explains good vs ok vs poor PSUs (tier 1/2 are good, Tier 3 are 'meh' at best and Tier 4/5 are AVOID, AVOID, AVOID)

Amazon are one of the best to deal with refunds. Depending how long you've had the unit, you may not even need to provide a reason - as long as you still have all the packaging etc.
