I currently have an ASUS P8B75-M as my motherboard. I honestly know pretty much nothing regarding the requirements for my cpu to be compatible since I had a friend pick mine out originally.

I now want to upgrade from an i5-3570k to a i7. My CPU and Board are both LGA 1155, so I'm wondering if the CPU I would buy HAS to be LGA 1155 or would 1150 be okay.

Specs just in case
i5 3570k
GTX 980TI
16gb Kingston ram
750w PSU
2 Hard Drives
Corsair H100i Water Cooler
Corsair 350D Case

Most, if not all, motherboards on the market today have CPU Support List on the manufacturer's web site. You should always check the support list to determine if a particular processor is compatible with a particular motherboard.

In this case, it's easy to determine incompatibility due to have differing CPU Sockets, but here is your current motherboard's CPU Support List.

The number assigned to a socket is more than just a way numbering different ones, it actually refers to the amount of those tiny little pins inside the socket itself.

So, an LGA1150 socket actually has 1150 little pins on it, and as such only a LGA1150 CPU will fit onto it.

Even if the difference is only 1 pin, it will be physically incompatible.

The only real upgrade to your CPU you can make without upgrading the motherboard as well is to an i7-3770k, but the due to availability the price for one of those is just not worth it, and you may as well go for a full mobo+CPU upgrade instead.

Plus, if your only using your PC for gaming and every day use, the upgrade to an i7 will not be worth the money at all. Only do so if you need Hyperthreading for editing/rendering type tasks.
