Hi!
So I installed a new GTX 970, and the computer won't boot past the BIOS splash screen. I have a corsair cx750 power supply, so that shouldn't be a problem, I have tried updating the bios, its ami p01-a2, which I believe is the newest? The splash screen is also at the wrong resolution, in the corner of the screen. Does anyone have any possible solutions?

Thanks

Try removing the graphics card and connecting the monitor to one of the motherboard video outputs (if you have them). Then reboot the system.

If that works , then Boot into the BIOS With the F8 key. Go to the area of the BIOS where you can assign the source of your graphics. The default is Auto, set it to integrated. Then reinstall the graphics card, but leave the monitor connected to the motherboard .

The system is likely not detecting the graphics card. Go to the Device Manager and click on Display Adapters. It should show the model of your graphics card. If it lists a generic graphics adapter , it needs the graphics driver updated.

If the generic adapter shows up, it is because the system was unable to identify the card. The graphics card could be faulty (check for powered LEDs and fans on the graphics card).

Try to update the graphics driver. If it will not update, your motherboard BIOS may need to be updated.

Is this a pre-built computer or a system that you built? Please list full specs of your system, including your motherboard and power supply mfg and models. What operating system are you running? Was the BIOS update successful to your knowledge? If I were in your situation, I would to the following:

Unplug the power cable from the back of your power supply
Hold the power button for 10 seconds and release it; this will discharge any power not already consumed.
Unplug both the PCIe power cables from the graphics card and remove that card from the PCie x16 slot.
Reseat graphics card (possibly in another slot if available).
Reconnect PCIe power cables to graphics card
Plug power cable back into back of power supply
Press and release power button on computer to power on.
Any change? If not, is this computer pre-built and windows 8/8.1/10 ? If so, check BIOS to see if "secure boot" option is disabled. If not, disable it.
While in BIOS, verify that computer isn't still assigned to integrated graphics.

When you say that computer won't boot passed post, does that mean the computer actually freezes, or it actually boots up but there is no image. If the computer literally freezes and doesn't advance passed post, then the issue is not drivers.

When you say "The splash screen is also at the wrong resolution," do you mean the Windows splash screen? If so then I'm confused about the statement "computer won't boot past the BIOS splash screen". Please try what I've stated above ASAP and respond back. Feel free to attach screen shot(s).

Ok. I have been able to boot by just switching to onboard graphics, not removing the card. I tried to install drivers from the disk that came with it, but it said there was an error because it couldn't detect the hardware. I can try again when i get back from classes, but do you know why that could be?

The generic adaptor did show up. The card seems to be working, it lights up but the fans dont spin, however in the manual it said that happens to make it quieter. The drivers aren't updating because it doesnt recognize the card (because it is unplugged to use onboard graphics). And the BIOS is the latest reccomended by the manufacturer.

Yes.

OK. First, within the display adapter screen there is the option to update the graphics driver. Go to the http://www.geforce.com/drivers
website and download the latest driver for your graphics card (to a flash drive preferably) Then run the run the installation program. Store the driver on the flash drive or note exactly where it is stored. Complete the driver installation as directed. After the system reboots, check the display adapter in device manager again for the graphics card model. You may have to restore the system if it black screens. To do that use F8 during the boot to enter safe mode and select a restore point.

Once back in to the system if the graphics card driver is not detected, try updating the driver manually through the display adapter menu.

If that fails, then I would update the motherboard BIOS according to your manual using the latest driver from the manufacturer's motherboard website (under support).

Prebuilt, I upgraded the power supply and graphics card (obviously). Its a gateway, ami p01-a2 BIOS, windows 10, msi gtx 970 graphics, intel quad core i5, corsair cx750 power supply. Reseating it did not work, however there were no other slots to put it in. Where in bios do i find secure boot and what card it is assigned to? Note, I cannot access BIOS when using the new card. It stays on the "press del to access bios", etc screen for about a minute then goes black. The gateway image in said screen is at the wrong resolution, and wont advance past it. I will upload some pictures in a bit, Im late for dinner right now.

When I try to install the downloaded drivers, the installer stops partway through because it doesnt recognize compatible hardware. The BIOS is already at the latest reccomended by my manufacturer.
