I finished the build, turned it on and there was no POST, there was no power to my mouse (usb) and my keyboard (PS/2 plug? also doesn't work now). However, all my fans are running, the power light on the case was on, and the gpu and its fans were on. is it my mobo?

Solution
Glad to help :)

For future reference though, RAM is probably the most durable part of the PC. I've heard of people throwing RAM across the room and putting it through the washing machine etc. and it still works.

Quite a few things to check out first.

Did you put it all together outside the case? Motherboard, CPU/HSF, 1xRAM and PSU connectors? Did it post then?

Do you have a GPU? Try without that, use your onboard (if you have it).

It could be your motherboard, could be your PSU, could be something wired incorrectly. In short, it's too early to tell exactly.

Yeah it sounds like your motherboard isn't getting enough power, as Outlander_04 said first thing I'd check is that you have the 20+4 pin AND the 4+4 pin power connectors plugged in.

Too early to say for sure what the problem is but most likely something to do with the motherboard and/or PSU.

I did not put it together outside the case. However i do have all the connectors in (just checked 4+4 are in, and the 20+4 is in. The PSU is an EVGA 600B. GPU is MSI GTX 950. Mobo -MSI 970 Gaming am3+. CPU -AMD FX 8320. I dont think case matters but it is a Corsair spec 02

both are plugged in

I'd take them out and put them in again to make sure they're plugged in fully.

If that doesn't work then I'd try resetting your CMOS in case a bad BIOS setting is causing the issue. I'd also make sure the CMOS battery is in properly. It is on your motherboard and looks like a watch battery.

It has not posted at all. It does not have an onboard (pretty sure it doesn't, specs are in another reply). I also think it might have killed my keyboard since it was working until i tried it with the new pc

Take a photo of your motherboard and upload it (you might need to use a desk lamp to get enough light), that way someone can check that the cables are correctly connected. I expect they are, but it can't hurt to check.

OK. it'll be a minute. I have to take out my gpu because it is on a slot that is apparently covering the battery. Maybe (hopefully?) it got nudged while installing the gpu.

Still not working. here are the pics with gpu, without gpu http://imgur.com/a/u7uuW/all

Sounds like a possible faulty motherboard or PSU.

- Just to rule out the RAM though, I'd try taking the RAM out and putting it back in again to see if that works. If it does I would try one stick on its own in each slot on the motherboard and try that again with your other stick of RAM assuming you have two.

- Then I would try to rule out the PSU, do the other things plugged into the PSU such as optical drives and hard drives power up?
- If they do it suggests the problem is on the 12v rail of the PSU or the motherboard. What is the model of your PSU? If it is a cheap PSU I'd say that's more likely to be the culprit, if it is a quality one it is probably more likely the motherboard.

I know my msi motherboard uses the 2nd and 4th slots for DC

They should be paired 1 and 3 , 2 and 4
It would be possible to use either pair , but on an AMD chipset board you would expect 1 and 3 to be the first link to the memory controller

I built a PC in 2009 and had a similar problem. I bought a new monitor that arrived before my PC parts did. I plugged the monitor into my old PC because I wanted to check it out, and was using the new monitor until the other parts arrived.

I built the PC and everything seemed fine. Fans were running and everything. But nothing would display on the new monitor. I finally plugged in my old monior and everything was fine. I loaded Windows and everything. I plugged my new monitor in and there was no image.

Finally, I put my new monitor aside, unplugged, for a couple days. When I plugged my new monitor in now, it worked no problem.

I was never able to find any explanation to this. All I can think of is that plugging the computer into a really old PC with a different connector somehow configured the monitor to work with that connector. Leaving it unplugged must have reset the monitor to factory condidtion.

I don't know if this is your problem. But before doing a ton of work, try using a different monitor, and try using different type of connections (displayport, HDMI, vga).

If this doesn't work take out your graphics card and plug directly into the motherboard. Read the instructions for the graphics card installation. Maybe you need to install drivers first for it to work. To do this you will need to plug into your motherboard and install Windows (or whatever you are using), then install the software for the graphics card, then physically install the graphics card. It's also possible that the graphics card needs to be physically installed before the software, but even if this is the case you will still need to plug the monitor into the motherboard and install the operating system, then the graphics card software. You have to read the graphics card instructions for the proper installation procedure.
