When I try to play GTA 5 my cpu and gpu are fine and even my ram is not maxed out but the strange thing is my harddrive seems to be. I have try defragging but that did not seem to work.

6gigs of Ram, PNY gtx 960, i5 2400 @ 3.1 GHZ, 1tb memory. GTA 5 is the only game that this happens to. Before GTA 5 is open my disk is fine, it says %0 but as soon as I run GTA it skyrockets up to %100 this is the only game that does this. Even the Witcher 2 doesn't even come close to %100.

GTA 5 recommended memory is 8 GB. When your computer runs out of RAM it will use virtual memory (file on your hard disk) the virtual memory is much slower. Keep in mind that not all 6 gigs of ram are available to GTA 5. some of the RAM is being used by windows and most likely other programs that you have running in the background. you probably have around 4 gigs available for the game, What you are experiencing is normal and best way to address the issue is to add more RAM.

My ram is never maxed out though. Does that not matter?

windows will keep a little RAM available for its own purposes.
if you hit 100% RAM usage your computer will be completely unusable, thats why windows utilizes the virtual memory, its slower but still usable.

In the task manager I watched my gpu, cpu, ram, and disk, when playing the game everything was fine even the ram but the disk was %100. Does my computer not show how much ram windows is using? Im on windows 8.
