I need to know what connection is best for my laptop to monitor. I have an HDMI output on my laptop and the inputs to my monitor are VGA, DVI and Display port. My monitor maximum display resolution is 1920 x 1200 @60 Hz my laptop has a 4 gig graphics card both laptop and my monitor are Dell.

So funny thing with HDMI and DP connections. A Display Port from a computer to HDMI monitor is easy, can be done with a cheap $12 adapter.

If you have HDMI on the computer and need to go to Display Port on the monitor, you need an active adapter which for a decent one that will work well costs about as much as a new monitor.

Both HDMI and DP essentially provide serve the same purpose - a single interface that has both a digital video and digital audio signal. One advantage is many DP sources can be convert down to HDMI with inexpensive adapters, but not the other way around.

Since your laptop only has an HDMI, you cannot convert it to DP, so your stuck with converting it to DVI with a simple adapter. Not sure if your monitor has built-in speakers, but you will lose the audio portion of the signal when using DVI. You can always use the built-in speakers or headphone jack of course.

Thank you so much for your response...I was under the impression that HDMI to Display ports were available and capable of converting to DP.
Saved me the trouble of wasting my time.
Thanks again.
