PC Gaming Performance Issues in First 10 Minutes

I just recently started playing Fallout 4 on my PC and noticed that my game play stutters badly for about 5-10 minutes. After this time, the game is running at a fluid 30+ fps with no further issues. This only happens when starting the game for the first 10 minutes. I also noticed that this issue happened when playing Skyrim a while back, so it seems to be indifferent of the game.

This is frustrating for me because I have to wait at least 10 minutes when starting a game to get solid FPS to start actually playing and enjoying the game. From what I can find online, no one else is having this issue with their games. Most people see stuttering happen later in the game after it's been on for a while, which may indicate other issues such as overheating.

My current setup is quad core i7, GeForce GTX 680 4GB, and 8GB RAM. There's no indication that it's a hardware issue to me since the game runs great after that initial stutter timeframe of about 10 minutes.

If anyone can help me solve this issue, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,
Kyle

In most cases the issue is caused by the OS also trying to access the hard drive while the game is. As you state the system is coming out of sleep mode, I suspect this to be the case. A second hard drive for the games would eliminate the issue. Letting the system come to a complete idle after waking will help, but not completely resolve the problem as the OS will always be active in the background taking time from the games use of the drive. Another option, that will again help but not eliminate the issue, is to defragment the hard drive.

Puff3r, thank you or the quick reply! I am using a 7200rpm 1TB HD and the game is installed on the same drive as the OS. I am using Steam to play the game. A few things I tried to no avail:

1. Updating my power settings to be on maximum to ensure my GPU is getting enough power. That didn't seem to make a difference.

2. Running the game outside of Steam. That also did not seem to do much.

3. Tried running the game on the lowest graphics settings. I still detected some stuttering, but not as bad. This was one of the later tests I performed and may have improved since I was just about outside that 15 minute window where it happens on initial game load after bringing my PC out of sleep mode. I'll have to try another test where my PC is on and awake for a while to determine if there might be a cause there.

Any ideas or things to try?

Ok, so I moved my game to another separate hard drive (not SSD) and the issue still appears to exist. Again, the test case is playing the game about 5 minutes after my PC is woken from sleep mode. Do you have any other ideas on what his issue could be or how I can resolve it?
