So I am currently looking at 3 GPUs that I might buy but don't know which one is the best.

R9 280x (used): £130 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/XFX-AMD-Radeon-R9-280X-Double-Edition-3072-MB-R9-280X-TDFD-Graphics-Card-/111866090491?hash=item1a0bbd13fb:g:ZogAAOSwX~dWioqd

GTX 960 (new): £163 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-evga-gtx-960-ssc-gaming-acx-20plus-pcie-30-7010mhz-gddr5-gpu-1279mhz-boost-1342mhz-cores-1024-3x

R9 380X (new): £192 http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-sapphire-radeon-r9-380x-nitro-dual-x-oc-pcie-30-6000mhz-gddr5-1040mhz-gpu-2048-streams-dp-hdmi-d

I will be gaming at 1080p. I'd like to take into account how the cards will do in the near future and which one would be the best to invest into for it's price.

The Build I am planning on using one of these cards in:
i5 4460 CPU
Z97S SLI Krait MSI Motherboard
8gb DDR3 GSkill RAM @ 1600 MHz
WD Blue 1 TB
Phanteks Enthoo Pro M
EVGA 80+ Gold 550w PSU

Solution
The 280 is a Used card which to me unless it it from someone you know I wouldn't really get. I had a GTX 480 up until last week. A good friend had it when it first came out, i bought off of him almost 2 year ago and it has done me great. I would have just bought another Used GTX 480 but then I was like eeehhh who knows what they Have done. If you can afford it get a new card.

The replacement was a EVGA GTX 960 4GB SSC. Same exact one you listed but the 4GB Version. VERY nice card. VERY Quite (Fans don't kick in until 60C). My PC it 10 times quieter when just doing idle work. The GPU sits around 40C when doing nothing. Much lower than my 480 which i redid all the thermal pads with expensive pads and thermal paste.

The 380X is a nice card as well.

Comapired the 960 2GB to the 380X 4GB I may lean more towards the 380X only because of VRam. It is faster and you have more. As far as the GPU goes the 960 is better.

If you are willing to get the 380X i would see what the price is on the 960 4GB and if it is the same price or in the same area i would go with the 960. Also Nvidia Drivers seem to be better as well.

But again it also depends on the games you play. Some games perform better on AMD and some perform better on nvidia! so just gotta pick and choose in the end. If they are similar power house cards, like the 960 and 380X are then i would pick which one would perform better on the games you play.

ok so the 280x is out of the question. The GTX 960 is about £20-£30 cheaper than the R9 380x which means I can spend that money on a cpu cooler like the CM hyper 212 EVO. I just don't know if that extra £20-£30 is worth the performance increase the R9 380x bring. Also to note, my most played games are Dota 2 and CSGO and I occasionally play GTA V. I am planning on getting a 144Hz monitor to take advantage of games like CSGO.

If you want 144Hz then yea i would go for the Nvidia if you go with a G-Sync Monitor and for the games you play the extra 2GB of ram won't help as much. If you were playing things like the Assisans creed or The Witcher 3 or something high detailed open world then i would say go for a 4GB card but I think you will be fine with a 2GB card. I mean my 480 was 1.5GB and I never had an issue with any game every something as demanding as Crysis 3.
