Hi

I just received a used r9 290x on Ebay. I just purchased an EVGA 600b psu that was working fine with my old card (GTX 570) and after running unigine heaven with the r9 290x it got to temps of 92 degrees and shutdown. I dont know if this is the PSU being too small or heating problems. Its a reference card.

Solution

I stated it before 90c is passing according to AMD. Just adjust the fan speed at different temps. Like I said before just keep tweaking it tell you find the perfect setup.

R9 series runs hot. Especially the 290s, AMD says that 95 degrees is the point at which it will start throttling itself to be cooler. There's nothing wrong with it running at 90 degrees. As long as the rest of the components are at a good temperature, this is exactly the temperature a 290 should be at.

could it be the 600w psu?

Yes, it runs hot but 65??!! thats way too hot even for idle on R9 290x.
please recheck and clean everythng!
one more thing, remove the card and then see the idle temps.
Also, use MSI Afterburner software to control temps untill 89 C

Ive downloaded afterburner and set the fan to 100% and run unigine heaven. Temps didnt go higher than 75c and no crash. Do you guys think its overheating? I still dont know if my PSU is correct, i think power calculator said its fine.

dont really have thermal paste right now, you think just taking it apart with a brush and dusting it over will be good enough? it looks pretty dusty.

Could be your case temps. Could be that you bought a card that was used for mining or maybe all you have to do is change the fan curve. I have a 280x that used to run hot. idle it was fine but when i started playing games it would hit 85-90c. What I realized was that the fan was on auto and stayed around 20-40%. I have since set my fan curve to change as the temp rises so usually my fans go to about 50-70 as the temp rises to 65c and usually my temp stays around 65-70 now. like the guy said above 65c is very hot for idle. idle should be around 40c to 50c and load for it should be 70-85c it can hit run until 95c but if it hits that it will probably start throttling so I suggest you change fan curves to prevent it reaching that high also clean out your case if it isnt already clean.

my case is very clean, its brand new and ive done decent cable management so theres no airflow obstructions. I really appreciate this info. The card looks quite dusty ie the fan has quite a bit of dust settled on it so im guessing there would probably be quite a bit of dust buildup on the inside.

I suggest just cleaning the card as much as possible and seeing how it runs afterwards then. That is probably the only problem. You should be getting better temps. Fan curve speed of 50 should be able to keep you at 80c and under. After cleaning

Not even true had the old 4870x2 and that thing ran hot as ever very similar to this cards temp. Even after Thermal paste change and constant religious cleaning the temps were still hot. Honestly set the fan threshold differently and just monitor your temps to fine tuning

So i opened the card up. Disgusting. There was literally a piece of grass inside. Thermal paste was basically dried out im guessing from hot temps. Cleaned everything and waiting for thermal paste to come. I ran the plastic front cover under water and took out the fan cleaned it with a brush, cleaned the thermal pads which are still kinda dirty, theyre hard to clean. Card was full of dust.

Im guessing this is the problem since running the fan at 100% was fine. Just as my last question a 600w psu should be fine?

Use afterburner and keep the fan speed set manually to 75%. Then test again. Maybe the temps are reaching higher than what is being displayed, I do know that there is margin of error in temp read outs with some boards/gpu.

81c, no crashing

im guessing its a heat problem, however i still get audio when it crashes. it basically black screens, theres an entire thread on here about the r9 290x black screen problem though what ive seen to me indicates a heat problem. From what ive seen these cards are supposed to be able to handle 93c as normal, i did clean and reapply thermal paste.

600 watts should be fine but its never bad to have more than enough when it comes in the psu department and always get a bronze or gold rated psu. Get a modular if you want for less cables in your case. Like he said above if you can prevent it by turning up the fan then just make sure the fan is set to keep the temp below whatever temperature is causing the black screen. The first owner probably used it a lot but I'm not sure since I've never had a 290x but from what 've read they do run hot. I have a 280x and it runs pretty hot.
