Hi!

I'm planning this PC-build:

* Motherboard: ASUS M5A78L-M LX V2
* CPU: AMD FX-8350 (4000mhz)
* VGA: Gigabyte GTX 960 4GB (2x windforce edition)
* RAM: Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz
* Sound Card: ASUS Xonar Dx
* HDD: 1 tb 7200rpm sata
* PSU: CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P (450W)

I currently have this config, just with a AMD Phenom II X4 965 CPU, so I'm planning to upgrade to a fx-8350, will my current PSU be enough, or will it require more power? Should I go for an fx-8320 CPU instead?

I calculated the PSU requirments (with http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator) for this system (with the fx-8350), and I got these:

* Results:
* Load Wattage: 368 W
* Recommended UPS rating: 700 VA
* Recommended PSU Wattage: 418 W

Does these mean that my CHIEFTEC CTG-450-80P (450W) will be enough for this system? :) I would really appreciate the help!

I know what the website says, I also know the various problems of vrm overheating that occur from a low end, low power phase board with no heatsinks. A bios update doesn't fix hardware that isn't there. It's your choice but if you go that route and start experiencing cpu slowdowns/throttling even with cpu temps that seem fine it's likely going to be the overworked/undercooled vrm. Make sure to stick with the stock cooler since it's top down vs a tower style cooler since it will at least help cool the surrounding vrm.

On the other hand there are intel motherboards for skylake which claim they support plain 1.5v ddr3 ram and intel says not to use that type ram because it can damage their skylake cpu's internal memory controller. Point...
A couple of potential problems. That motherboard may have been fine for the phenom x4 but the fx 8350 is twice the cpu cores and draws considerably more power. That motherboard only has a 3+1 power phase which is pretty low end for such a large cpu. It also doesn't have any heatsinks on the vrm which means they may very likely overheat while the cpu is under load, even if it's not overclocked, potentially causing throttling even if the cpu temps are ok.

I think you're also pushing the limits of your power supply, between being only 450w and being a lesser quality psu (chieftec brand). The 960 isn't an overly power hungry gpu but I think you'd be better off with a 500-550w or better psu of better quality along with a better motherboard. While it may work there are potential for problems in my opinion. Despite being an inexpensive cpu, you're trying to run one of amd's top of the line cpu's on the lowest tier components.

Point being that sometimes motherboard makers say whatever they feel like. Technically it can work but how well it works is another story.

Thanks! :)

Would I be safer with an FX-8320 instead of the FX-8350?

Also If I have to change my Motherboard, than what is the cheapest motherboard option for me, If I want my current components (RAM, etc) to function? :)
