desktop: reinstalled windows 7 a couple days ago, downloaded drivers, installed some programs it was running fine. last night turned it off and then turned it back on (wasnt doing any updates or anything). posts but then gives me "reboot and select proper boot device..." error message.

tried windows repair unsuccessfully. reinstalled windows 7 once more and let updates run through the night while i sleep. wake up this morning, desktop is powered off so i turn it on and it says its configuring windows updates. stays at 0% for a while then gives me "Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes do not turn off your computer" error message.

I see two issues (re-installed/fresh Win 7) the one with the update failure followed by REVERT... is to install some of the updates.....which ones? First turn off auto updates, restart, look at Update History, check to see if any got installed. If Internet Explore 11 was not one of them and the default IE 8 is being used to updates. By installing IE 11 it will install the basic updates, restart and let all shutdown delays time out you will see some updates being installed take a little time. Check IE to verify 11 was installed. Then try a manual Check for Updates In 2018 I had started at 181 updates, tried install but faulted you know the rest. but this time the number should be much less.
Now if you cannot get Check Updates to work, try the MS Troubleshooter, But the I have had to use this method, but it is not for the faint at heart, do not skip anything. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/971058/how-do-i-reset-windows-update-components
