upgarding to ddr3 1600 ram

Your mobo supports both DDR2 and DDR3. Maybe there is a setting in BIOS to switch between. Also, is your memory on this approved list?

I'd try 1066 sticks, maybe 1333, the AMD 965 was the first AMD CPU that could reliably run 1600 sticks,
