CPU running hot for no reason > 90 degrees C

My desktop PC is over 3 years old. I have an Intel i5-2500 on an Asus P8Z68-MPro board, using the stock Intel heatsink and fan. I'm not overclocking, but I have 3 hard drives running in there.

Only in the past few weeks, I've been getting random restarts, and on startup the bios sometimes reports a hot CPU, but when I restart again, Windows starts OK.

I just installed SpeedFan, and it's reporting between 80 and 90 degrees when idle in Windows. System temperature is OK at 28 degrees. CPU temp in BIOS shows about 72 C.

There wasn't much dust in the case or on the fan, but I cleared off anything that was there. I also cleaned off and reapplied thermal paste. SpeedFan and BIOS are still showing high temperatures.

I'm not sure if it's a faulty sensor or what. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Thanks!

Neel

Yeah, something not right when you get 72 C in bios at idle.
I can think of anything else but
Wrong bios settings (maybe try hard cmos clear on your mobo just to be sure)
No correct cpu/heatsink contact
Or your cpu faulty?

I tried that and it didn't make any difference. When I restarted the PC again, I still got a BIOS error saying "CPU Temperature Overload - Press F1 to continue." When I press F1, it opens the BIOS interface. I simply exit, and it lets me back into Windows.

Here's the odd thing now. I just installed the Asus Probe II utility and it is showing 42C for the CPU temperature. SpeedFan continues to show 92C. Which one is right??

Solved! Turns out is was the stock Intel cooler - one of the crappy plastic plugs was a bit loose, and I guess the heatsink didn't seat well onto the CPU. When I seated it better, the temperature dropped to 52C idle in BIOS.

Today I got a Deep Cool Ice Edge Mini FS cooler, and now it's idling at 32C. Much better. It hit a high of 39C in Windows.

Thanks for your suggestions mp5mafia!

Yeah, thanks. Perhaps I should have said "no discernible reason"
