Need help with HardDrive

I posted before about a couple questions I had but I have some new ones. My cousin gave me his gaming PC but told be he took out the hard drive and that I would have to get a new one, my WD 1tb blue arrived recently, I put it in its slot and found out there were 2 cables unplugged near the hardrive ports. They both matched perfectly into my hardrive so im guessing thats where my cousin unplugged his HD and left the cables. The problem is when I look at my mobo the only SATA cable is connected somewhere else in the computer and the black cable I plugged into the hardrive (says ATA or something on it) is no where to be found on the motherboard, that I can see at least. How do I know if the hardrive is working? I also need a operating system, going to be getting windows 8 soon, when I plug in my monitor and turn on the computer it says: reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key... what does this mean? Can someone help me :) thanks.

Solution
Here's where the SATA cable goes:

See the six little L shaped slots there.

A drive needs 2 cables. Power and Data.
The power cable comes from the PSU, the data cable connects from the drive to the motherboard. You need to buy a new SATA data cable.

You're getting that message, because you have no OS. There is nothing for the system to boot from.

Umm... your question doesn't provide enough information to even begin to help you. For example, what type of computer is it, what motherboard, etc.

There are just two things that plug into your HDD, the power connector (bigger one that comes from the power supply) and the SATA cable which plugs into the motherboard.

Yes I have 2 cables plugged into the hard drive its just that one of them I cannot see It plugging anywhere into the mobo, there is one sata 6 coming from the mobo to a esata port. The computer was custom built by NY cousin and I do not know all the parts, I am a big noob with computers but I can see the mobo is a Asus p6x58d-e

1 cable (the wider one) goes from the drive to the PSU.
1 cable (the smaller one) goes from the drive to the motherboard.

I am aware of that, right now you are not providing any help, if you read my replies you would know that I have the 2 cables plugged in. My cousin gave me the computer and assuming that he had just unplugged his hard drive and pulled it out leaving the 2 original cables unplugged, knowing that and the fact that those 2 cables that are all twist tied together both fit into the hardrive (one larger, and one smaller) it seems like those would be the right cables for the Hardrive. My problem is, i will say again, that the smaller one, which should go to the mother board I dont see anywhere plugged into it, the only SATA I see in the mother board goes from it to an external E SATA Port. There also seems to be a similar styled flat cable, the same size as the one behind the hardrive plugged into the disk drive, if the cables I have plugged into the HD now are from the disk drive why would he have left them right behind the hardrive slot and why would they be unplugged?

You do see that I posted a picture of the SATA ports on your motherboard right? That's where the other end plugs into. I don't see what's so hard about this, it's like an extension cord, one end goes into the wall (motherboard as shown in pic) the other end goes into your device (hdd). How are we not "helping" you, I drew you a picture for crying out loud!

I actually think I see a sata cable coming out of that L shaped thing! It appears to be the same size and colour as the one that is not plugged into the hard drive! It was hidden behind some other comp parts but I think that may be the solution! The hard drive must have been plugged in this whole time :) thank you!

Ya no, I found the thing you were talking about, it was really hidden all I can see is the same flat wire coming from the cluster of L shaped plugs on the MOBO, the picture really helped. The whole time it was all plugged in :)
