I just received my XFX R9 280X and it's temperature is about 75 degrees Celsius on idle. This is not normal and i'm wondering if my card is just faulty or if there is something I can do to fix this. Thanks.

SPECS:

XFX R9 280X
AMD FX 8320
8GB RAM
MSI 760GM-P34 Motherboard

I know you don`t want to send the card back under the Rma procedure, but it looks like you are going to have to.
Rather than faffing around with the card, it`s clear somethings is wrong.

A 280X card should never reach the temps you are talking about in windows, at the desktop and while in Idle mode not even playing a game.

As I said it suggests that the cooler is improperly factory fitted in some way to the Gpu on the card it`s self.
It should always sit at about 30c or a bit higher depending on how large your system case is.
And if you also have extra system fans fitted to the case or Chassis.

Just get the card swapped out under the Rma conditions, it is not working to the set default factory conditions most Ati 280x cards do in...
If it is running at 75c when at windows desktop and running at idle.

It should be in the mid 30`s in c.

The simple answer is to send the card back under RMA procedure of the card vendor.
It`s definitely not running as it should, it would suggest the cards cooler is badly fitted.
Are you sure you are reading the card in C and not F double check.
23c is about 75F. It would explain the high value.

If the reading is in F then it`s ok.

with that driver bug if it been fixed or he don't have the hot fix ?? did you check fan speeds ? do they spin at least at 20% idle and ramp up as the card heats up ??

all psu plugs in to the card ?? in all the way making good contact ??

then I wonder if that board can supply stable 75w at the slot for that card ?? maybe a low voltage issue there ??

Fan speeds are at 49%. It doesn't change at all according to MSI Afterburner. I took out the card and put it back in and now it runs at low to mid 40s on idle and up to 67 degrees while playing Black Ops 3. It is not the driver bug. Although it seems to be quite normal at the moment I am still not sure if this is a faulty card or not. That was a huge scare when the temperature was 75 on idle.

When the GPU'S temperature was at 75 my CPU and motherboard were both at low to mid 40s. The room i'm in is usually quite hot and i'm not sure if that could affect anything. Right now with the GPU at low 40s on idle the CPU and motherboard are the same.

I used speccy and it was definitely Celsius. It showed 75 in red text. I can send it back but that is what i'm trying to avoid.

Here's what happened in the past hour...

The GPU Usage rose to 80-95 percent and the temperature rose to 70-80 degrees. I then looked at the task manager to see if any background processes were using a lot of the GPU. I found that an instance of NVIDIA GeForce Experience was running. I clearly remember uninstalling it but I must have forgot one of the programs on the programs list. I uninstalled it and restarted my PC. I then did exactly what I did before and went into black ops 3 where the temperature and GPU usage were normal. Then I went idle on my desktop for about 7 minutes where my GPU usage randomly sky-rocketed to 85 and the temperature slowly rose to the 70s. Both the GPU usage and temperature aren't going down at all.

Just get the card swapped out under the Rma conditions, it is not working to the set default factory conditions most Ati 280x cards do in regards to it`s idle temperatures the gpu core should be.

Take one more good look at the card with the side of your case off, and verify that the fans on the card are spinning when it is hitting the high temperatures you are talking about.
If they are it suggests a badly fitted cooling solution on the card Devin.

The only other thing that would suggest why you are getting a high gpu usage also and high temperatures would be if you were infected with a bitcoin mining program running on your system that you are not aware of.

To test if it is the case, running windows in safe mode would be the indication of such a thing or a bit coin mining program running as a back ground task within windows.

That is all that I can think about as to why the temps of the Gpu and the utilization of the gpu core are so high when the card is supposed to be Idle sat at windows desktop, and not even playing a game ect.
