Hi,

I currently have a Gigabyte 2AC8 with an AMD FX-6120 6-core and a Radeon 7450 HD (pre-built system). I'm considering upgrading to an R9 390 and increasing RAM from 10 to 16 GB. Is my current setup even worth salvaging?

I've had bad experiences with AMD drivers, so ideally I'd switch to Nvidia. Don't have a lot of money to spend on a new CPU and mother board though, in addition to the GPU and RAM. I also don't know if I'll need a new PSU or anything - the only hardware-related thing I've ever done is replace a few sticks of memory...

With a budget of $800, is it possible to go from this to a system that will support 3 monitors at 1080p and the Oculus?

Yea looks like the 8150 is the highest you can go.

It depends on the games you play. Some games will be better than others on each video card. Me i'm an Nvidia person when it comes to video cards but that is just me. I don't know how well they play games. Just search around for R9 390 vs GTX 970 and i'm sure you can find a lot of benchmarks of the two.
The R9 390 is a nice card. That CPU might bottleneck it a bit though but you could upgrade to an 8 core if the board support it. Make sure your PSU have all the right power cables, is of good quality, which if it is prebuilt it may or may not be, and you can get an Nvidia video card over the AMD card as well as Nvidia does have better drivers.

I just got a GTX 960 4GB for my 8 core amd machine.

Cool, didn't know you could do that. I'm a little concerned about the 8-core support though - I've been looking at the AMD FX-8350, but mobo specs ( http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/specs-gigabyte-2ac8/ ) don't list it as supported.

R9 390 seems to outperform GTX 970 despite the lower price - at least on paper. Is it worth it?
