I've Had this issue for awhile. I try to connect my HDD mentioned and whenever I do, windows 10 recognizes it in certain places, but never shows me a path that I can open it with in windows explorer. I've gone through multiple forums and called tech support, and have yet to get solution. Here's what I've seen so far
1. Devices and printers recognizes the device as a "Hard Drive Disk; Storage Device" but after setting up the device, it gives me one of two status messages. either "device can perform faster when connected to usb 3.0" or "needs trouble shooting; driver error"
2. after troubleshooting, the issues it tries to resolve are "reinstall device driver" which it does but still labels as "not fixed", and "problems with pnp devices" which it doesn't try to resolve
3. in Device Manager, the HDD will occasionally show up under Disk Drives as its name, always show under usb controllers as "Mass Storage Device", and never show up under storage controllers.
4. I try to change the path under disk management, but it never shows up, so I can't do that

note: I've done a windows update and installed the updated drivers from WD's website
Any ideas?

Hey there again, Nectar_Ooktok!

Since the WD My Passport works on the Win 7 computer, then it's should be a driver issues. Use the computer/laptop manufacturer's website then. If the system is OEM, then you should search for the computer/laptop model on their manufacturers' websites instead, rather than searching for what kind of mobo is inside. As long as you have the manufacturer's drivers installed for those USB ports, it should help you recognize the WD My Passport in Windows 10.
Here's a link from MS you might find useful as well: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff553572%28v=vs.85%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396
You could also try to uninstall and reinstall the WD Passport external drive as a device...
Welcome to the TH community & Happy New Year, @Nectar_Ooktok!

I'm truly sorry to see you struggle with the detection of your WD My Passport! :( I'd strongly recommend you to make sure you reinstall the USB 3.0 hub drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's website, instead of letting Windows 10 update them. The Driver package Windows automatically installs are different from those the hardware manufacturers provide, they tend to be more generic. That's why it's recommended to use the MOBO's model brand-specific updated drivers from the official website.

Unfortunately, it's not uncommon for this Windows OS version to have issues when detecting external devices, so I'd also suggest you to try your WD Passport HDD on another computer running a different version. Check how the drive will be detected there and try changing the drive letter & path from Disk Management there. Here's a tutorial from our knowledge base that might help you, if you need assistance with the steps: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=Kifg0h

If you haven't done that already, I'd also recommend to try using a different USB cable as well.

Hope this helps you. Keep me posted!

So I tried looking up the drivers for my motherboard (manufactured by YIFANG) and the only drivers I've found were on websites other than Yifang, making me a little worried and not want to download them. As for changing the drive path, I used my Win7 computer to change it fro E: to P:, but it still wouldn't show up. Also, when you say I should get a different cable, do you mean that I should use usb 2.0 instead of the usb 3.0 that I'm using? The cable always works on Win7, so I don't see why that would be a problem
