Black screen when playing games Win10. CPU and GPU aren't overheating

Hi

Firstly, i think this belongs in the GPU section, I'm not entirely sure...

When playing games, my PC has been black screening, ie the PC shuts down and restarts.

What's strange, is that this only happens with certain games. Currently that list includes World of Tanks, Batman Arkham Origins, Xcom Enemy Within, World of Warships and Armoured Warfare. Assassins Creed syndicate (which is a very demanding game), RUSE, World in Conflict and CSGO (which are not demanding) don't crash.

Looking in the event log led me to this "The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device ACPI\PNP0A0A\2&daba3ff&1.". I managed to uninstall this driver by disabling windows update, since i thought it was the cause of the problem, but the crashes persist.

The max temp on the CPU cores is 70*C. The gpu, 75-80*C. So overheating of those components is not the problem. I've noticed that Open Hardware Monitor reports that motherboard temperature #3 and #6 reach rather high temperatures. This could be the problem, depending on what those sensors indicate the temp of, or whether they're misreporting. Mobo sensors are like that. Unless someone thinks otherwise, i'm going to stick with the theory that these temps aren't the problem.

I'm thinking it's a hardware problem with the GPU or PSU. I've had problems with this PC black screening in the past (that error in the event log wasn't there previously) but i had the PSU replaced (it's a thermaltake smartpower 750w as seen in my sig. Not the best PSU, but not extremely dodgy either) and my PC has worked great for many months. Only in the last two weeks or so have i had this black screen problem.

So how would i check if it's the GPU or PSU playing up. Or is it not a hardware problem at all, since AC syndicate runs fine.

thanks in advance. This problem has been driving my crazy, and i'd really like to get it fixed.

EDIT: Apologies, forgot to add my specs. I'm used to them being in my sig on other forums.
CPU: Intel I5-4690k stock speed
Motherboard: Asus B85 Pro gamer
RAM: 2x4 - GB Avexir kit (xmp is not enabled)
GPU: XFX R9 280X DD
PSU: Thermaltake Smartpower 750w
OS: Windows 10 64bit

if your computer is restarting it is because of a psu issue or a overheating issue. In your case it sounds like a psu issue if you can I would get a psu tester or switch out the psu. unless your computer is getting really hot.

Have you done anything different to your system in the past two weeks ?

I'll get a hold of a PSU tester ASAP then. Overheating isn't the issue here.

I'm trying to think of things i've done recently.

* I swapped my RAM from the avexir kit to a GeiL kit, I just switched that back and the PC still crashes though.
* I recently cleaned my PC. I can't imagine that i broke anything by doing that, but it's possible.

I may have changed something else, but i can't recall it.

usually the ram can change the speed in the BIOS and with that pc being a B85 Motherboard you may want to check the ram speed and make sure it right or not higher than what the board supports I had this issue with my moms fixed it no more BSOD. Usually it would crash more frequently from this however.

I think the 12V rail on your psu may have a lot of voltage spike at higher loads and that might be what is causing it.

I've just checked in the BIOS and it shows the RAM ass "Undefined 4096MB 1600MHz" Undefined is odd.
It shows the correct speed, 1600mhz, however the timings appear to be wrong. It should be CAS9 (9-9-9-24). This shows them to be 11-11-11-28 (https://goo.gl/photos/1GjomCu9RnijfzLP6). So i'll change that to 9-9-9-24 and test that.

I've also tried reseating the GPU, so if it does work now, we won't know exactly what the cause was.

Could you tell me why it's important that it's a B85 mobo, as you mentioned?

I'll get a PSU tester as soon as i can. thanks for your help by the way.

EDIT: I've just remembered some other things i recently changed. I enabled link state power management for the gpu in windows power options (i've just found that i've had it disabled in the BIOS, so i enabled it with BIOS control).

And i recently disabled the intel graphics in the BIOS, since i've now got all three monitors plugged into my R9 280X

Power supply testers are not all that reliable, a second power supply is much better solution. Try to borrow one that is working. I have seen another thread like yours where TT psu was considered to be culprit. And in your case it does seem like a power supply problem.

I've just changed the RAM timings to 9-9-9-24 (see here: https://goo.gl/photos/9gg9VRaU6BJgY9dE9), and for some reason my PC crashed even more than usual.

So i guess this means we're just down to the PSU being the culprit?

EDIT: I just ran memtest86 and it restarted after the 2nd pass. Does this mean it's done, or there was an error?

The B85 chipset is made is a budget business Motherboard so it may have a different setup process and it probably doesn't support ram higher than 1600. Lower compatibility usually than consumer grade Motherboards. A new psu would be the best way of testing it because you most likely only have a problem during high psu load and it wont be connected to the motherboard so it wont use much wattage to test the psu which means it could test out fine even if it is bad.

Okay then, i think it's safe enough to bring the power supply into the retailer and get it replaced under warranty.

Thank you very much for your help, i'll post an update here once i've done that.

Hi A39, just lketting you know that i replaced the PSU with a Corsair RM750X, and my PC is working perfectly.

Thank you very much for your help.
