I currently have a pretty solid rig for 1080p gaming -

Geforce 970 w/ 4gb ram
i7-920 cpu
Asus VE278 monitor.

I'm hoping to make the leap to at least a 2k monitor.

Is it possible to do this with my current GPU, or will i realistically need more there too, given my first Gen i7 cpu?

For monitors, i was considering the BenQ GW2765HT as my upgrade, the price/performance seem to hit the sweet spot with this model. if there are better options at around $400 at that size (27 in or better) i'd like to hear them.

Also, another variable here might be the coming 2016 gpus, which will probably drop prices of gpus too - if you have any knowledge on when those are supposed to arrive, would you wait or drop cash now?

New GPUs should come in Q3. It would be wise to wait because both camps are promising big jumps in performance per watt. Moreover 970 is too slow for AAA titles on 1440p ULTRA. It could be fine on some games with MEDIUM/HIGH presets. Also input lag on youre chosen monitors seems abit high. Its really not worth to upgrade from 1080p to 1400p at this point.
