I understand that the i7 4790k (4.0ghz) is better than the i5 6600k (3.5ghz), however would the 4790k be more powerful than an overclocked 6600k at 4.6GHZ? My main tasks are editing and rendering videos at 1080p 60FPS using apps such as Sony Vegas Pro, as well as games such as Minecraft w/Shaders mod*, and several high end games. Furthermore, my graphics card will be a Geforce GTX 960.

*Those of you who are familiar with the Shaders mod will know that I'm going to suffer a pretty big FPS decrease with some of the high end shaderpacks out there.

Indeed. For that stuff the HT of the i7 will benefit you.

Hyper-threading can add anywhere from 20 to 34% more performance in heavily threaded software. This is what my tests with various render engines have showed me.

The 4790k at 4.0 GHz will edge out the 4.6 6600k. Do remember - it is easier to clock the 4790k to 4.2 or 4.4 than to clock a Skylake at 4.6.

For rendering (specially 3D and particles and etc) - even 2700K at 4 GHz beats by single digit percentages the 6600K at 4 GHz. Hyper-threading does do its job well.

The 4790k as said above will out performe the the I5 in almost every aspects even if they overclock well that's not a given that a cpu will over clock well its like the lottery sometimes you win sometimes you don't when it comes to overclocking your CPU.

So for my purposes, recording, editing and rendering (I heard hyperthreading is pretty useful for exporting/rendering), I take it that I should go for the 4790k instead then :)
