GTX 970 disappointing frames in some games

A few weeks ago I bought an EVGA 970 ACX off eBay used. I had bought a 980 in the past and took it back due to the same issue. I decided to give NVIDIA another chance here, and what I am getting is the same problem. Low usage, lower FPS. I had a 570 that got 300fps in TF2 and other games, and this one pulls around 200 when I'm staring at a wall, and I'm not joking, 40, when I am looking at the map from a far. I tried my friend's 290x which got ~500fps in most of these games, it was crazy, and the synthetic tests say the 970 has in fact more horsepower than the 290, so why is it doing this? It runs cool, quiet, and the only thing I can think of is it is trying to be 'economical' just like every product these days. I am to the point of selling this and never buying NVIDIA ever again, I have tried quite a bit to try to fix this.
My specs: 8gb 1600 DDR3, 8350 4.0 GHz, 970 ACX CX 750m PSU
I doubt it's a bottleneck from anywhere. I just am sick of the FPS drops and poor performance. In games it performs, well, alright, but nothing 'impressive' I won't max out Planet Side 2 at 60fps, BeamNG.Drive dips to 30, and all this was in the '100s with the 290. I tried DDU and disabling GeForce experience, raising the power level with MSI afterburner, and so on. I would really appreciate some help here. I like NVIDIA, and like this card, and would really like it if I could keep it.

If you've got any questions, you know what do do. ;)

This issue is somehow on your end, the Nvidia GTX 970 seems to be underperforming quite badly in your system.

If you're getting 40 fps in TF2 sometimes it means It's performing worse than a GTX 950, heck, maybe even a GTX 750 Ti.

Planetside 2 is CPU intensive so I could understand why you're not maxing that but otherwise I can't really pin point what's up.

What did you do when you replaced your previous GPU with your new GTX 970? Did you uninstall old drivers first? Did you do the mandatory stuff?

Ok, thanks for the tip. When I took back my 980, I used DDU to remove all drivers, then used my friend's 290x for three weeks until I got this. I used DDU before getting the 970 and probably again so I could disable GeForce experience, which is supposed to fix the issue, but didn't for me. I probably ran Display Driver uninstaller at least 5 times within the last two months on my system, just for measure.

What driver are you using?? As your problem surprised me.

When I got my MSI GTX 970 4GB 3 months ago I got rubbish fps on every game and I saw it as being the driver that came with the GPU, when I installed the latest driver from the NVidia site and installed it I was flying high fps wise in games with no problems.

Could you try and get a software that monitors your hardware while gaming, like MSI afterburner which I use which is very good. You can find tutorials on youtube on how to set it up.

Then report back and tell us what your getting, screenshot if you could.

Also when I buy hardware I always get new as used can have a lot of risks involved.

Regards

I'm curious to know why this is as well, i don't own a 970 but have seen quite a few unsolved issues regarding Tf2 low fps not just on 970 but 780 as well. It feels like it os/driver related somehow.

Since you had no problem with your AMD, what i found you'd think would make no sense but digging around someone with fps dips in TF2 fixed his problem simply by relaunching Steam as Administrator.

If that works for you i gotta have a dig at UAC. UAC affects everything and wouldn't be surprised Geforece Experience has problems with it also.

Windows 10 64-bit, the total latest drivers, I just ran DDU and wiped it clean.
I'm using an ASUS M5A78L-M/USB3

I totally just clicked the wrong button. Lol, Sorry, I meant to hit reply when I hit solution. You probably deserve it though, thanks for the reply. I'll send a report screenshot, and mess with MSI afterburner. I had the same issue with a brand new 980, about a month ago, though. Thought it was defective. Do you play games like TF2, if you do could you run it on maps like Well and tell how many FPS you get maxed out? Like I said earlier, it dips to 30 and 40 which isn't cool. Thank you!

The 780 was a great card. My friend had one, it ran almost every game maxed out, and I wasn't aware that those cards did it too. I assumed this was related to the card trying mega hard to be as efficient and cool as possible, but that might not be true. Windows 10 here, just upgraded from 7. I'd have to try running as administrator. Thanks!

Try Administrator, also turn UAC off then uninstall/install drivers - Use the custom > clean option Nvidia provides during install.

Did you have the AMD card before you upgraded to Win10?

Google search windows 10 uac and Google will explain how to turn it off. Even Google hates it, Na its good to have i guess to protect against viruses but ever since Win7 i've had it turned off and have never had a problem. Related or not, i just never liked it.

Will do! Thank you for your input. The 980 was bought with a whole new PC a few months ago, that meant new windows, and it still had the issue though. Anyways, I'll be sure to try this, thanks.

Ye I play it maxed 1080p and I get about 120fps in big intensive area where a battle is going on between players and I'm also overlooking the map. Its the MFAA (Multi Frame Antialiasing) that is eating the frames the most.

If I play Left 4 Dead 2 maxed I get 200fps and I play borderless windowed mode which stop the tearing somehow which is nice, no laggy mouse too.

It may be a hardware problem as that many GPU's can't have the same problem. You really need to monitor your pc while playing a very GPU demanding game like FarCry 4, Killing Floor 2 or Fallout 4 for example.

Also this may be a bit of a random question but have you plugged the correct PCIE power cables into the GPU?

Hmph. Good to know, thank you. I also thought I'd say this, since I upgraded from the 570, the 16xQ CSAA is no longer an option, only 8x MSAA. From my knowledge that is the older way of aliasing and performs better on older cards, and FXAA is the newer option that performs better on newer cards. MFAA is not an option in my video settings. My 570 still works, except the fan doesn't spin, and I used DDU after and before testing that, don't worry lol. Do you know what's up, or does anyone know a lot about AA then?

Was CSGO, i remember now, someone needed to be in Windowed mode, Fullscreen would give miserable fps with multicore rend/on or off in that game. Should have been fixed by now though.

Windows 10 had a major update, make sure you did all that after upgrade Bill2002. Also a Fresh install/reset wouldn't be too astray an idea either, upgrades aren't that favorable left as is.

I don't know much about AA, i know MSAA performed better in Farcry4 than the other options it had. Usually i leave them off.

Aah Jesus I remember my Father telling me about this, his pc kept updating all his software and drivers in the background without telling him and he was wondering what was eating up all his CPU.

Also Windows 10 does defrags and other clean-ups while your doing stuff on your pc once again without telling you.

This is why I will be sticking with windows 7 for as long as I can.

He could try an absolutely clean HDD see if that removes what is getting in the way? That or try and get windows 7 because god windows 8, 8.1 and windows 10 seem to be causing a lot of hardware problems.

Yea, i asked if the AMD card was before the Win10 upgrade, anything can go weird after an upgrade, once was 1 issue might be several now. Theres a few questions and suggestions, hoping we get an update on some of them :)

I agree with you. I got 10 because of the solid color pallet looks good on my new glossy IPS monitor, and I thought it might fix my fps issue.

..Windows 10 is know to cause frame rate issues....silly
