Computer not recognising new GPU, Nvidia Control Panel not opening

The following is a post that I also submitted to a subreddit at this link:

Yesterday, I upgraded my HP Pavilion p6-2489ea and gave it a CX750 semi-modular PSU and a GTX 960. Funnily enough, I also had to permanently remove my CD drive to get the PSU to fit.
Everything was fine and dandy when I first booted up the PC after installing all of the parts. I launched Fallout 4 and it was running beautifully at the native resolution, something previously impossible with my old GT 630. However, while I was still playing, the computer restarted abruptly without a warning, showing a black screen first and then rebooting.

At first, I thought it must have been doing some more updates and had to restart for the changes to take effect. I couldn't quite tell since I couldn't see any messages or updates because I was in a game. Then, as soon as I logged in again, I launched The Witcher 3 to benchmark it, but it had slowed down to a crawl, with one new frame appearing every ten seconds or so, as if the whole game had slowed down.

I quit the game as soon as I could, opened Device Manager and saw that under the Display Driver tab, the GTX 960 driver had a yellow exclamation mark sign next to it, and its properties said that it stopped working because the device had reported an error, with "Code 43" at the end of the status.

I went to check on which display driver my computer was using through the Control Panel, and it said that it started using the Microsoft Basic Render Driver. I tried to open Nvidia Control Panel to see if I could fix the problem through there, but strangely enough, it didn't open. It launched a series of processes, but it hadn't rendered any windows.

At this point, I was getting slightly worried (naturally). I attempted to reinstall the graphics drivers for the GPU, but every time it said that the Graphics Driver had failed to install, with no reason stated. After several attempted reinstalls, there was still no progress.

The Skyrim launcher has a setting for which display adapter to use. It still only gave the option to use the MS Basic Render Driver, even with the GTX 960 appearing in Device Manager. I think the cause of the issue was the abrupt crash or restart (can't tell which) while I was playing Fallout 4.

----

Today, I tried booting the computer in safe mode to see if anything changed. I still couldn't launch Nvidia Control Panel, as it was disabled in safe mode, but I also still couldn't launch the offline Java installer that I downloaded beforehand. I needed Java to use the auto-detector on the Nvidia website to see whether that detected my new GPU.

I used the Display Driver Uninstaller program (DDU) to remove all drivers from my computer, which was done in safe mode as well. The computer restarted, and I re-downloaded the bundle drivers from the Nvidia website. Now, the Device Manager shows the new GPU under the Display Adapters tab, but like all of the other times when it was there, it has a yellow exclamation mark sign next to it.

Additionally, a program that I installed called TweakBit Driver Updater says that a lot of my drivers are obsolete, with the majority of them being PCI-to-PCI Bridge drivers. Since it's one of those irritating programs with giant paywalls, I can't actually update the drivers nor can I find out where to update them manually.

At this point, I have no idea what to do. I want to fix whatever problems there are with my GPU, and yet I can't open the Nvidia Control Panel to do it. Problems keep appearing nonstop, and I'm not gaining any new ideas. I'd really appreciate some help with this. It's my first computer upgrade, and I don't know what to do next. I'm getting increasingly more worried that it's an issue with my hardware, which would be significantly more risky to mess around with than software.

I'm going to switch off my computer and plug my old graphics card in to see if the computer detects it. If so, then I might find a way to open Nvidia Control Panel and figure out what the problem is. If not, then I'll still be as stuck as I am now. My specs are below, for anyone who wants to see them:

HP Pavilion p6-2489ea

Joshua-H61-uATX motherboard
i5 3350P CPU
8GB RAM
GTX 960/GT 630 GPU
Corsair CX750 semi-modular PSU

----

I replaced the new GPU with the old one, and somehow everything is working as it should. Nvidia Control Panel launches correctly, and all of my games recognise the dedicated GPU. I really don't understand what the problem is. I can't help but think that Windows keeps setting the integrated graphics to default whenever my old GPU isn't installed, and the only thing that the new GPU is doing is projecting the image onto the monitor.

I really need help with this. I am completely stumped and I don't know where to go from here. I'm going to repeat exactly what I did in upgrading to the new GPU. I'm going to reinstall it, install the drivers and check Device Manager and NCP all along the way. I really doubt it will give me any results, other than maybe the same weird crash that happened the first time, but hopefully it will at least give me a hint as to what's wrong.

Code 43. That is gpu related problem. Got the same error from time to time in my previous 660 SLI setup although reinstalling the drivers usually fix the problem. What version of windows you were using. You can try looking for the latest driver for your hardware directly from HP. Might check if there is BIOS update for your motherboard as well. If updating your hardware drivers and mobo BIOS still not solving your problem try that 960 on another PC.

Unfortunately, I think HP has discontinued the BIOS updates for my computer, so I can't update the BIOS. Also, everything is up-to-date apart from the GPU, which of course wasn't working. I've returned the GPU to the store and gotten my money back. I think what might have happened is that I installed the video drivers and then launched Fallout 4 as quickly as possible without a restart of any kind, so that might have caused some kind of overload on the GPU. I might not have given it time to reach a higher temperature or to completely install the drivers.

Thank you for the reply, though. It helps that I at least know that somebody else knows something about this.
