My low FPS caused by CPU??

Hello, somewhat new to all this I'm hoping I'm posting in the right thread.

My buddy has a computer He just recently updated to a MSI GTX980, evo 212 hyper cooler, and a 1000w power supply cooler master, 8 gb of ram.

While playing games like arma, dayz ( I know these games are not optimized, but bear with me) the frames never jump above 30. He's sitting at 9-15.

I'm thinking after this upgrade it could be his CPU that is bottlenecking. The CPU he's running is a AMD FX 8120.

Just for comparison, I'm running EVGA gtx 980 ftw acx 2.0, core i7 4790k, 16gb of ram, on a hero vii. And In the most heated moments in arma I get no less than 50 frames.

So back to my question, is the AMD CPU FX 8120 bottlenecking his GPU???

Thanks in advance!

Solution

That would be correct. His 8120's compatible socket would be a AM3+ socket. His mobo is probably compatible with AM3+ CPUs. Intel CPUs use LGA1151 sockets. He would have to switch to a higher-end FX CPU or switch mobos and get intel.

No problem, I know this because my friend has an FX-6300 (a processor with similar performance) once and he also has a GTX 980, and there was a huge amount of bottleneck in his system, but he switched to an Intel i7 processor and now all his games run at 60 fps+

Absolutely bottlenecking mate , an old bulldozer with a 3.1ghz base clock is not a good match for a 980.
Ignoring the slight performance loss between Zambezi & vishera per clock you need to run any fx CPU at 4ghz+ minimum to even stand a chance of hitting 40fps+ in those arma engine games.

So there is an issue that I'm looking at, that I probably should have mentioned. These CPUs probably aren't compatible with his socket? I believe it's an amd MOBO. GA-99FXA-UD3 socket m2 I believe. I'm not fairly familiar with AMD more Intel, so I'm not sure what CPU would actually fit in his socket. It may be a little outdated

he has a decent board & a 212 evo there.

he should be able to push 3.8-4ghz & thats boing to be anyting upto another 10fps gaming wise.
If he's running that 8120 at stock speeds he's severely undercutting his performance.

Thanks everyone for the replys. So it seems it would be worth it to try and overclock the CPU, try to boost performance there and see how it fares out. We'll give that a try
