First time build, burning smell when powered on.

So this is my first build and well I might have screwed it. I tested my motherboard and cpu + cooler outside the system first and everything was fine. So I mounted the mobo, cpu, and graphics card in the case and as I'm still waiting for my ram to arrive, I tried powering on the system to make sure everything was still fine.
The case led turned on, the cpu cooler started spinning and the mobo gave me the missing ram code but then a burning smell came from the graphics card area. So obviously I turned the psu off and examined the area. It was kinda dusty but nothing major. I cleaned it off with a dry antistatic cloth.
Now when the psu is turned on the case led doesn't turn on anymore and the mobo doesn't give any code. So can a graphics card short ruin a motherboard?

Solution
More likely to be the PSU that the PCIe slot - sometimes difficult to figure out exactly where you're smelling it from.

Can you post you specs? Specifically looking for the motherboard & PSU, but the whole specs would be ideal.

Hehe sorry man, I've wasted both our time. The smell was thermal grease I'd used too much of and general new parts spinning up for the first time smell. The smell went away after cleaning thoroughly, and the case led header had come loose in my cleaning job..... Really sorry I kinda panicked a bit not gonna lie. Won't know if I've fecked something up till ram arrives in a couple weeks. Thanks though have a solution =p

Don't worry about it. Glad you figured it out.

Thermal paste is a nightmare when you first start out, so many conflicting views on how much to use etc.

Once it spits out the side of the CPU though, you've definitely used too much! LOL.

It's unlikely you caused any real damage with it but, as you said, you won't know until the RAM arrives.

Fingers crossed for ya! Good luck.

Computer up and running perfectly! No problems except for 2 dead ram slots, cant really complain I got a cheap board :) OC'd my i5 to 4.3GHz seemed to have reached thermal limit at about 88 degrees.

Lesson for new builders is computers smell funny first time everything boots up haha.
