Hey guys I'm a new member to this site but Ive visited here often thanks to Google with various computer questions etc.
But now I have a issue I can't find a clear answer to and I'm wondering if u guys can help me out.
Ok so I bought 8 GB of G.skill 1600 (2x4gb) ram used from ebay. Got it in the mail today, I removed the old ram I had g.skill (2x2gb), installed these ones and went to the bios on my board it shown that the ram was there and being read. Then I proceeded to Windows and once my gadgets loaded up it showed 4gb in the system monitor? So I instantly freaked out turned my PC off and Removed the sticks to check for any defects didn't see any, reinstalled one ram stick this time and it showed up as 4gb.shut down and tried the other ram stick by itself and my PC wouldn't boot. Then I did some research and found that clearing the cmos could help. Ok so I did that and reinstalled both sticks went into bios and it showed both being read but it showed them as single channel. Left bios and went into bios again this time they showed up as dual channel after that I loaded Windows up and it reads all 8 gbs of ram.I have restarted, shutdown and flipped the psu switch on my pc and it still reads as 8gb now.I've also tried each stick individually now and windows boots up.

My question is should I now try to return the ram anyways? or is the issue cleared up now due to clearing cmos?
Thanks
( my motherboard is asrock 970 extreme 4 and I've never had this issue before changing ram)

When changing memory always reset CMOS if you don't then your PC will not properly detect the new memory it would be the same thing if you changed the processor.

I'm no expert in this sort of stuff, this is just my opinion/ideas. Someone else who could make a better guess will post, I'm sure, but I figured my two cents couldn't hurt. :p

It seems... really odd. Did you buy from a reputable person/company?
The only way I could think that a CMOS clear would help is by flushing out any old settings from your 2x2 kit, forcing your mobo to adjust to the newer RAM. Though, like you said, it never happened before... soooo...
How long do you have to return the RAM? If you have some time, play around with the RAM. Play some games, render some videos, edit some models; do what you usually do. If you notice issues, return the RAM. If you don't, keep the RAM, but keep the 2x2 by your side just in case.

Again, these are just my non-expert thoughts. If someone who has a badge that says "RAM Expert" (or some variation) posts, take their word over mine.

The ram is from a user on eBay but he is in the same city as me and I doubt a refund would be a issue if necessary and if so hopefully Ebay will sort out the issue for a misleading ad. I think I will try some games out I think black ops 3 likes using around 6-7gbs and that will ensure both sticks are being used. Thanks

Ok so I ran black ops 3 for a lil while no issues in game. I think it's all good and needed the cmos cleared.
Thanks for the help guys Imma continue testing other programs to see if problems show up.
